estimates of violence to women:
On average, three women a day are murdered in the USA by husbands or boyfriends.
31% of U.S. women report
being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend.
30% of Americans know a woman who was physically abused by her husband or boyfriend in the past year.
A national study of 222,653 students grade 6-12 found that 81% of girls and 76% of boys reported experiencing sexual harassment in school. (USA Weekend, September 8, 1996)

Outdated sex-crime laws leave military women at risk
Those reports underscore the Defense Department's own evidence of the mistreatment of women. According to its latest released figures from a 1995 survey of thousands of military women, 52% said they had been sexually harassed, with 6% reporting actual or attempted assault. The depth of the problem was dramatized in 1996, when a dozen Army instructors at Aberdeen, Md., were charged with committing sexual crimes against female trainees.
