I think it may work for some people.
Personally I tried this with a friend of mine, we both had just come out of serious relationships and were just after no strings attached sex, it work for a while, but I have now developed a crush on him and want more. I have no idea if he feels the same way and am confused as to what I should do about it.
So from personal experience, it's probably not the best idea, but if it works for you go for it.

Yes there are different variations out there1)friends with benefits----that is friends who also have sex with each other without romantic tie-ins2)booty call happens when youhave a friend you call anytime you are horny or sexually aroused.The problem is thatone of the parties always wants th to change the terms of the original understanding. thereby creating friction

hell yes! someone does not always develop feelings. i don't think friends w/ benefits works well w/ friends you see everyday. it's more of a 'i see you out sometimes, we talk on the phone once in awhile, and your my myspace friend.
try the benefits thing w/ a more obscure friend, someone who lives y'know 30 minuets away instead of 10. That'll keep it nice and mushy feeling free.

Women produce a hormone which encourages a bond with whomever you've had sex with. It's hard on the mind and soul to have sex and no love and commitment. For me, anyway. Your mileage may vary.
