Such bizarre and unusual side effects, where on earth do these properties come from?

It is a derivative of phencyclidine (PCP). It has many legitimate human uses, and may be the safest dissociative anesthetic available to anesthesiologists (I have seen it used mostly in orthopedic surgery for elderly patients for whom general anesthesia poses too great a health risk).

Its psychedelic effects are caused by its ability to bind to and stimulate NMDA receptors in the brain. Ketamine is just a chemical ... the bizarre properties are the result of the way this particular chemical changes the homeostatic mechanisms of something far more complex (i.e. the human brain).
