depends on what is being investigated.

Murder... forever. (no statute of limitations)

Most other crimes the statute of limitations will be 7 years or less.

From the point of time the crime is disovered... to the expiration of the statute of limitations... the government can persue getting an indictment.

The indictment might or might not extend the time allowed to actually prosecute...

Criminal offenses except murder (and a few others I can't recall right now) have a "statute of limitation" within which charges must be filed against someone or the case will end without being filed on. The length of the statute of limitations depends on what State you're in and what the offense was... so... misdemeanors in CA are usually one year... Felonies it's either 2 or 3 years... murder, kidnapping... something else I'm forgetting... those cases remain open forever.

Are you talking about an investigative stop (i.e. you are being detained while the officer figures out if you should be arrested or released)? Or are you talking about an ongoing criminal investigation (i.e. the JonBenet Ramsey murder)?

you can only be put on trial for a certain case once, and police cant do anything about a minor crime you committed 7 yrs after the crime was committed. minor crimes, i.e. small theft, BandE, miniscule vandalism.

there is no time limit. if police suspect something suspicious, a good cop will keep at it until there is no question. there are lazy cops who don't take their job seriously who will probably keep their search short.
