There are several common knocking sounds old altimas make. Timing chain noise from the top of the valve cover is caused by chain guide wear and there is a special metal chain guide now to replace the plastic one that is broken off and is in the oil pan.

If the noise is come from the front when you start to take off and turn like at stop light. It could be the C/V joints on the front axle's or if its coming from the rear over bumps it could be the rear sway-bar Links. Other then at your Question needs more details.
