alrite so our new dog, miniature pinscher is in the crate at nite. he usually barks for a long time til he gets tired,or falls asleep. tonite, we're gonna put the crate at the side of the bed. is that the rite thing to do? like he won't get too attached will he? also open to suggestions but i'd like if they come from dog owners who used crates.

oh and yes- we let him "go" outside before we put him in, and we also wake up early to let him go again outside.

and he's not crated during the day unless we're not home.

also, he barks if no one is in sight, so he's not getting spoiled is he?

hm we do try to tire him out during the day before we put him in... works kinda as he falls asleep earlier, but still barks for a while.

btw, covering the crate doesn't work for him. maybe a stern "no" works, and if he sees us

I have crate trained, and when my puppies get too noisy, I tell them "No" sternly. I never ever give them positive attention when they are noisy. Next to the bed or in another room has never seemed to make a difference. Just being consistent and not giving in is the key. Some are more easily trained than others. Good luck!

hi :) congrats on your new puppy :) i am actually going through the very same thing w/ my newest boxer puppy. we actually have another dog and two crates, and when left totally alone she'll howl, but when the other dog is crated next to her she's fine. with the first dog, and another before that, i made sure that there were "snugglies" in the crate. such as a min pin sized cuddly stuffed animal, preferably the same color as the mom, or as the puppy. i don't know if this is actually a proven method, but it did help my dogs. even a snuggly blanket works.

the only drawback to having your dog's crate in your room is that that will prolly be where he ends up sleeping for good. if that's okay with you, no prob then. good luck, those are really cute dogs!!! (i once had a narcoleptic one, lol, don't quote me on that, you would just have had to witness it for yourself!)

it's perfectly alright. My Chi sleeps in his crate at night right beside my bed for the past 2 years. The best thing to do would be to put a thin towl or even a thin baby blanket over the enitre crate so he can't see out to see whats going on. my Chi has to have a blanket over his "bed" at night so he can sleep good. I trained him as a very young pup to be quiet by putting a hard toy like a small tennis ball in his crate that he could play with until he went to sleep. but he still needed a think blancket over his "bed" so he could stay asleep..

We use a crate for our dogs... My dog sleeps in my bed at night and the other dog stays in the crate, however. But they both have a problem with barking. What seemed to work best for us was a squirt bottle. Just plain water. Any time they bark, you tell them a stern "no" and squirt them once. It works best if you squirt them in the face because they don't, obviously, prefer it.

When I first got my dog she slept in her crate in our room. Her crate was facing us so she could see us. She no longer needs her crate, so she sleeps in her bed in the same spot, in our bedroom. I like having my dog sleeping in the same room as me, and it has never been a problem for us.

He'll be fine beside the bed in his crate.
You should take him for a nice long walk and tire him out.. Make sure he pees and poops, then put him in his crate.

Make sure you don't put the crate near your bed when he is barking, he will see it as a reward.

We crate our chihuahua and at first we would cover the crate with a blanket and that worked for us. Now she knows and has no probs

Actually, you want your dog to get attached to you. They tend to see the family as a pack, and there are reasons that they should be affectionate and attached in a pack. It's good for their behavior and training. So it's fine to be near the bed.

No, your dog won't get spoiled. Despite the temptation to treat them as such, dogs are not children. As long as he knows who's in charge (you) it's impossible to actually spoil a dog into bad behavior.

He'll be fine - and he will get used to it, I have a little one, and leave him in his cage (when I leave the house) sometimes the entire house is over-whelming. My dogs thinks of his cage as his very own apartment.
