they are both similar. hornady makes a .450 marlin 325 grain bullet in the new lever revolution. with this new ammo, it is now capable of reaching out to 300 yards with with enough energy to kill a moose or brown bear. for Canadian hunting, i would use this.
but the .444 marlin only comes in 265 bullets in lever revolution.
get the .450

The 444 is a classic round and will bring down big game inside 150 yds. The 450 was designed to more approximate the ballistics of the 45/70 Gov. and use the same action as the 444.

I think at this point it's all a matter of preference. The 444 marlin has proven ballistics, then again, so does the 450 marlin, yes the 450 is capable of slightly heavier grain weights, and slightly higher velocity, but the 444 marlin has more choices of ammo styles and weights, giving you more room to "customise" your shots. My personal preference is the .444 marlin, but others may like the 450 better. I can tell you this, the elk or pronghorn won't be able to tell the difference.

If you're walking around in Alaska, the 450 is a much better choice. After all, if one of those big bears decides you're lunch, anything with a trigger instead of a lanyard is going to look too small.
In my youth, the 444 was handicapped by being loaded with bullets meant for 44 handguns, typically 240 grainers, and that's too short (and most of those bullets were too flimsy) to take advantage of the extra case capacity. It's a much better cartridge now that 45/70 and 450 leverguns have made it obsolete.

Go with the 450m that round really packs a punch. So does the .444 thats what I killed my first deer with but one day wile my father was putting a new scope on it the screw driver slipped off and cut his hand.He flipped out and grabbed the weapon by the barrel and started to beat the ground with it.I was around 14 at the time so i grabbed my little brother and ran upstairs.Last I seen it it was all smashed up in pieces he took it and burried it in the yard.Several years later I brought it up to my father and he said to never talk about it again.Yes I know my father is Phyco

I would not kick either out of bed. I prefer the 444 as you can get a wider variety of loads for it and, in spite of the people who have nothing better to do than stand on soapboxes and flap their jaws, it is the ultimate heavy brush and timber rifle.
