it means that you should value both beauty and sustinence. you cannot have one without the other. yes, you need to eat, but you also need to enjoy life and appreciate the beautiful things around you.

my greatest assumption would be that one penny gives you what you need to live in the bread and the lily either contributes to your beauty or your peace - or you can give the lily away and have a friend to share your bread with. Otherwise, it's a pretty obscure question to ask.

Its a simple message. Live happily with what you have. Bread is to Live and Lilly is to be happy.
It is the equal message of "Live for today and do not die for tomorrow". With a little money that you have today, fulfill your today's basic and amusment needs. Give the least importance to save what you have, when you have a little for today.
There is another expression which is almost inline with the above is "Living poor to die rich". This is a complementing statement to the atatement in your question.

I think it means that the bread will sustain life and the Lily will make it such a prettier place to be in the days you have left on earth.
That is just my opinion.

It means - never forget that you need the emotional needs [beauty, art, nature] in your life as well as the physical needs [hunger, food]
While it presents a positive thought, I prefer the idea of "the best things in life are free" to find beauty outside - but then I don't live in early industrial England.
