At night I get an "empty" feeling in my stomache and I end up eating a lot of food. Do you guys have any suggestions as to what sort of foods will satisfy this?

I get the same feeling.
For the most part I've settled on Vanilla Frozen Yogurt [use what you like] scooped onto an old fashioned cake ice cream cone.
[These are the yellow cones with the flat bottom]

Eating the yogurt in the cone automatically limits the amount that I eat.
The cone is practically zippo calories [20].

On occasion I'll omit the yogurt and smear a big dollop of peanut butter around the inside of the cone. It's sorta' like a "sugar wafer" cookie w/o the fatty creme filling.

I try to avoid chocolate before bed because it can cause some reflux/heartburn; didn't when I was younger.

go ahead - I'll bet you haven't had a cone for some time.

aside: the old tryptophan and/or turkey makes you sleepy is a myth that needs to be put to rest:

The ancient Chinese understood that going to bed in an empty stomach could be very upsetting.

There are several night snacks you could grab. The idea is to have something warm inside you, not too heavy to give you that nice cosy feeling before you go to bed.

1. Porridge
2. Dim Sum if you could afford a Dim Sum chef in your home.

The whole idea may seem contradictory, but this has been the practice in China for millenia. If any of you are in Hongkong , Shanghai or Singapore. You would have observed this phenomenon.

Slice a banana in milk and eat it with a spoon. I find it very filling...the banana is just sweet enough and the milk calms my stomach.

Oatmeal has been recommended, because it's healthy, AND it has triptophan in it, which is a chemical that induces sleep (it's in turkey, which is why you're so tired after Thanksgiving dinner!)

you want to ingest protein based foods that are low in fat like cottage cheese, low carb protein shakes, etc. proteins provide satiety much longer than carbs or fats and they also cause the least increase in insulin. controlling insulin through the diet is the key to losing body fat and the key to keeping the weight off
