What is going on? How do people afford to live there? Is the rest of Ireland like that?

Well, I have loads of friends in Dublin and I'm relocating there next summer, so I've been researching this. Essentially, the factors that made Dublin so expensive are the booming economy coupled with Dublin's role as the Republic of Ireland's biggest and arguably most cosmopolitan city.

Compare it to New York -- it's considered by many the most exciting place to live in the US, which drives up property values at a crazy rate. This in turn makes shops, restaurants, and bars charge more, both because they have to in order to pay the rent, and because, quite simply, they CAN. Is everyone who lives there rich? No, of course not. Some people bought their homes years ago, and others scrape by in order to live where the jobs are.

The rest of Ireland is not nearly as expensive, though as other people here have said, other cities in Ireland are getting way more expensive (than they were) as well. But really, Ireland is like most other countries, in that the cities are extremely expensive and the rural areas a lot cheaper. It may seem that Dublin is an extreme example of this, but, like I said, Ireland's economy is booming.

I have two sons living in Dublin and a third just left it and they all say it costs a fortune living there.Everyone seems to be ripping everyone else off.Going to the pub requires a suitcase full of money by the sounds of it,nightclubs are extortionate, cafes charge like they're 5star restaurants. The list is endless but worst of all are the ludicrous rents being charged.
How do they afford it?With great difficulty I would imagine.
Is it cheaper outside Dublin? For the most part yes but Galway's not far behind.
It's just as well we Irish can take a joke!

Why, consider the name of that town! "Dublin". It was named "Dublin" because the price of everything there doubles every year!
