Hi there Max Bob,
Personally I wouldn't be offended if u eat in front of me during ramadan. It's your liberty to do so unless the rules of a specific country forbids it. However it would be courteous if u first mention of your intention to your Muslim friends as not to stir sensitivities.

:-)

Why not? People eat in front of fasting Christians all the time. It's their job to not succumb to temptation. It is a bit cruel to eat in front of them, but I wouldn't lose much sleep over it if I were you. They ought to be praying during their mealtime anyway, and if the Muslim faith has borrowed this idea from Christians, then their prayers should be said in private, away from those who would eat in front of them.

Yes u can eat!!! And that's the whole point. Fasting means complete submission to Allah, and to refrain from particular acts.

One of the reasons to fast, is to feel the hunger poor people go through, so u can be sympathetic towards them and care about them in the future. Because once u have suffered something u r more likely to understand how those people feel.

So yes, poor people have to see people around them eating and they are sitting there hungry. It is no offence at all, to eat in front of fasting people, they have to endure the same conditions/feelings, to make them better human beings and sympathetic towards others.

Apologies in advance for a long answer..but it won't bore you I promise! Thank you if you read all of it :)

Yes, you are allowed to. But it would be in good respect to not shove it in their faces, or at least be considerate and not "pig out" in front of them. It is good practice for Muslims, however, to resist temptation. Fasting is beneficial to all in that way. I, personally, do not get very tempted or affected when people eat in front of me even though I am fasting. Most understand and volunteer to make accomodations. However, I would never demand for them to do anything to accomodate for my needs. In school during lunch, although we know we can suppress my temptation, my brother and I simply go to the library instead of lunch. After all, it is more the drinking than eating that gets us (although we still resist temptation). While fasting, we cannot eat, drink, and must abstain from any sexual contact or behavior (not that I do at such a young age, I'm only 15! But I choose to fast, and never missed a day since I was 7 or 8). It truly is a good experience, as our strength to resist temptation is fortified, our bodies purified, and how the feel for thirst and hunger allow us to feel what other who are less fortunate feel as well.

Please do not think that fasting is barbaric or unreasonable. If one is unable to fast due to taking medication, health problems, illness, etc., he or she is excused from the fasting until he or she gets better and is fully able to fast again. This person will then make up the missed days by fasting after the month of Ramadan (the month of fasting) is over and the holiday of Eid is over. Also, if one feels dangerously dehydrated, feels faint, etc., they may break their fast without penalty, given that they will make it up in the future.

Overall, it would be in best taste to exersize respect and understanding to one who is fasting. Be reasonable, and do not shove food in their faces or brag about how good the food is that you are eating. Believe it or not, it is probably a sin in your religion if you do so. You may eat in front of Muslims; I am sure they will not make a big deal or make a commotion, and at most will politely ask you to take their condition into consideration. Fasting makes us stronger in mind, body, and spirit.

Thank for the question, I appreciate it. I hope this helped you on how you should approach and act toward one who is fasting ;) Remember, just be reasonable; you do not have to go totally out of your way or not eat, but just be mildly considerate, and all should be fine. As a Muslim, when my (non-Muslim) friends know I am fasting, I do not expect them to not eat lunch or go crazy over it, but to just understand and respect and acknowledge it is all. Good luck!

You can but it would be rude and quite disrespectful to do so out of malice or spite. I am Muslim and cannot fast for medical reasons, but I don't flaunt my food in front of anyone who happens to be fasting. I MUST eat and I am excused from fasting for that reason.

You certainly can do so here. there are so many religions here that we mere citizens are not meant to be able to know the customs and limitations of each and every one of them so as not to "offend" their delicate idiosyncrasies.
