I heard somewhere that replacing my stock radiator cap (16lbs) with a lower one (7-8lbs?) would relieve pressure from my hoses and be less stress on my cooling system.

I'm not EXACTLY sure what a radiator cap does as far as pressure ratings go, so I wouldn't have a clue.

It means that your cooling system would not be able to take away as much heat. When you put pressure on the system the coolant will have higher boiling point. Then it can carry away more heat without boiling. Your car was designed to run with a 16# cap, so that's what you want to leave on it.

those caps may well be a endure to get off now and returned yet once you purely push down and swap counter clockwise some quarter turn this is going to come off. try this while the automobile is chilly so which you do no longer threat a burn. do no longer exchange the coolant till you already know this is undesirable,....in case you're taking your automobile in for an oil exchange to couple of minutes-lube they're going to examine all that stuff out for you and supply you a record. finally do no longer take somebody's word that such and such "might desire to be" inflicting the difficulty,....have it checked, apersistent via prognosis is nicely worth in simple terms what you pay for it, no longer something. A heater project can honestly be brought about via a minimum of a million/2 a dozen different issues and there is no thank you to inform which till you seek for the outstanding reason. Now you have already blown what 8 dollars on anti-freeze and nonetheless have not have been given any thought if that could desire to be the difficulty or no longer.

You need to build pressure to be able to maintain the proper temperature range mostly 185 degrees, with the lower pressure cap it will release pressure into the over plow bottle possibly making a mess. and if you run the engine at a lower temp the computer will not function as programed and the engine will run less efficient and probably perform poorly. Just leave well enough alone if its not broke don't fix it.

Your car is suppose to have a certain amount of pressure..if you replace it with a lower Ib rating then your cap will blow and then youll be leaking antifreeze..thats why the have different lb ratings..different cars use different ones..so dont change to a lower cap you will have nothin but problems... and what a cap does is water that gets real hot creates steam which makes pressure and if you get too much pressure and your cap dont open then your going to blow your motor

each # is 1 degree above boiling your 16# cap will let you go 16 degrees before your cap opens up and boils over. lower cap press. you lower boiling over point

Every pound of pressure raises the boiling point of your coolant by 3 degrees. Lower pressure = lower boiling point & a greater chance of a "boil over". Stick with the factory recommended pressure cap. ( Example : straight water with a 16 lb. cap has a boiling point of 260 deg. F).
