I thank God for my life when things are at their worst because I feel humans learn from suffering, it makes us stronger mentally.
And it also teaches us compassion toward others considering we know what it's like to be in their shoes.

I guess this is where the idea of ignorance being bliss comes in, a pampered person cares about nothing but themselves.

I thank God all the time. While sometimes I feel I was happier when I was blind, deaf, and dumb, I am thankful I am no longer in ignorant bliss. Pain is hard. Pain purifies. I have to deal no matter what. Really, really - it was a lot worse back in the days when the Bible was actually written, so who am I to be the whiner? Suck it up and get on with it, right?

"When do you thank God?" - Before, during and after a planned event or trip. Usually after a bad situation, as I am unharmed, but wiser for the lesson, (although it was harsh).
I also thank GOD for miracles given throughout the day - if I am aware enough to notice them, (I sometimes don't notice until a quiet moment when my brain registers what happened.)
Basically a lot.
My guardian angel is so tired at the end of most days from saving me from my inattention - doing stupid things. Sometimes I think I have angels on shifts. (Well I drive in California, so that's a daily miracle commuting to & from work.)

I thank God for everything, the good and the bad. The sunshine and the rain. I thank him for the food I eat, the water I drink, the friends I have, the lessons he teaches, the "luck" I have, the fact that I have a nice life.
I thank him for my very existence everyday.

I thank God everytime (eg.when wake up from sleep, before and after eating, when receiving good news and etc.&everywhere.. but how much thank we give still can't compare with posterity and all things He give us in this world . He is the Most Kind, the Most Merciful.
"And glorify the praises of your Lord before the raising of the sun, and before (its) setting." (V.50:39)

I always think of what David says in his Psalms "And I will still yet praise Him." This comes up over and over again, when David is at his worst. He still talks about praising G-d.
The other thing I think of is the Mourner's Kaddish. In it there is nothing about death or the person who passed. Instead it exalts G-d and His glory. His compassion and mercy. It concentrates on G-d instead of our sorrow.

I thank God each day (but never often enough) for all His wonderful blessings. And when I'm in a time of trial, I lean gratefully on Him..
