Elderlies are required to have a protein intake similar to the amount of what the younger people are required to. A safe protein intake for elderlies is estimated to be 1.0 g protein/kg/d or more high quality protein.

It is true that elderlies have less body mass protein but always put into consideration that adequate protein nutrition could limit gradual body protein loss and improve protein anabolism in the elderly. Protein has a great impact on the bones too, calcium alone won't do all the job for the skeletal needs of the elderlies and the younger people.

So, not unless there is a dire need to limit protein intake for the elderlies (such as kidney disorders), YES they do need to increase their protein intake.

They tend to not eat enough protein and eat too much of starches (think socioeconomics). How much protein they should consume would be better analyzed considering overall health, healing from disease, and even a nitrogenous waste reading would be nice. It needs to be considered not just from the kidney stand point, but streangth in other systems of the body.
