I have a cousin who was in the military and realized he was getting paid less then a quarter of what private contractors were getting paid . He then weighed his options , searched around and found a better deal for his services . He got fat on purpose , got out of the US military and now works for Black Water and makes upwards of $70,000 .

My question is - Do other soldiers look down on a man who leaves the US army for a better pay or do soldiers resent the man ?

I doubt anyone could begrudge him. Most people who enter the armed forces don't stay for life. Everyone wants to make more money and soldiers are shamefully underpaid for the important work they do.

I would look down on him for getting fat on purpose if it got him out of the military earlier. He should be a man and finish his obligation..if he did that he's no better than the people who pretend to be mental to get out.

If someone does his time and is discharged on good terms or a REAL medical issue we don't resent him/her.. we wish them the best of luck and hope for the best.. the shitbags on the other hand most of his fellow soldiers would probably say he can go somewhere with himself

No resentment is found. And, yes, we kinda get screwed by equality in pay. But, we chose the path of defending America and pay is not a consideration. You have to understand that we (military) are family. We share a closeness that is truly special and can be understood only when you must depend on your fellow serviceman to protect you. When someone leaves our family to enter the civilian force there is no resentment whatsoever Think of it as a family member at home going off on his own to start a new life. Basically the same thing. We wish them luck and good fortune.

For the people I work with we dont tend to look down on them. For the long term i still believe the military is better to go. As for the 70,000 is not bad but i know that the people working on the communication systems over here are making over 120,000.

Private contractors are the most hated people in Iraq. They act like they can do anything they want to, any time they feel like it. They have better equipment, all the booze and dope they can handle, some even have hookers flown in from central europe for their ah "use". They live in the Hilton while the Gis live in a Conex. I hear there have been firefights between GIs and Contractors. Contractors look down on Gis and treat them like grabage. All i can say is if i was a GI in Iraq... well there are a lot of snipers around...

serving in the military is not about making money.
ask any soldier if they joined to become rich.
i will guarantee that not one will say yes.
it is about serving and honoring your country.
your cousin should be ashamed of himself.
he could have waited until he had served his term and then found more lucrative work.
what he did was wrong and i would consider something like that treason.
your cousin definitely has NO honor and it is kind of sad because the only person that can cost you your honor is yourself.

Hey where do I sign up? I'd like to make that much. I'm glad he made it because the government never really cares about it's soldiers. It's horrible I know people that have never received their promised pay and never received their sign on bonuses.

I never had a problem with a soldier that had finished his tour of duty and got out. Most of the guys I knew would have laughed at your cousin for not finishing his duty.

We don't want someone like your cousin, especially if he is in it for the money. He wasn't a soldier. More like a mercenary. He should have paid attention to that old Army cadence...

"Yer in the Army now, you'll always get your chow, you'll never get rich you sonuva b&^#, yer in the Army now!"

I guess your cousin joined the military for the pay and benefits.
some of us join for patriotic reasons to preserve our freedoms and way of life it might sound corny to some but, we believe in this country and are proud to wear the uniform!

He got fat on purpose? He got kicked out, huh?
can't wait to finish his enlistment?

When I served we may have been jealous of such an individual, but we never looked down on anyone like that. After all, your cousin still served and that's what really matters most.
