A couple of free distributions (of Linux) I recommend are:
1) SimplyMEPIS
Very nice and easy to install.
2) openSuSe (pronounced Sue'Sah)
This one also has a "Live" version, meaning you can actually run it from the CD without installing it to see if you like it.

Unix isn't free or open source.
Linux, on the other hand, is and a number of distributions are available. Most people start with Ubuntu, Debian, or Red Hat.

Linux is more of a user friendly operating system. I don't know anybody who uses unix as their OS (aside from laboratory PCs using specialized unix based software to operate equipment). I don't use Linux, although I've been told that Ubuntu is a great starting point.

For starters, there are many flavors of free unix downloads but I tend to use the CentOS because it is basically Redhat without the licensing fees and what my employer prefers. Basically 99.9% of rpm's that will run on Redhat will also run on CentOS and all of the troubleshooting documents related to Redhat apply to CentOS as well. But they are all good!!! so try a few and see which you like best. Maybe you're adventurous and want to run more than one flavor on a single box, in that case check out the open source version of Xen....
And if you want true Unix on an i386 I do believe that Sun has open sourced it's Intel version of Solaris but you would have to confirm that by looking on www.sun.com

google it.
Look for RedHat Linux
Linux is close enough to Unix that 99% of Unix programs run in it... and its free.

Try linux.org. They list almost all if not all distros available. Do some research before picking a distro so you can download one that most meets your needs.
