well start from the ground up.
For all operating systems, there is an underlying language, for windows, MS-DOS. Then there is the operating system which makes it usable to the average person, the graphical user interface, the most common being windows. this is what programs run off of, organizes files, data etc so the average person can use their computer instead of having to learn to perform all tasks in a computer language.

Some Operating Systems require different things out of its hardware. some are easy on requirements, other require a lot (ahem Vista) the thing is finding the right one for you. There are many choices

Windows Vista, xp, etc.
Mac OS X (requires Mac computer or a lot of time lol)
Linux varieties
and a few more.

Enjoy!

Not sure exactly what your asking. You can find out which Windows version you have by clicking "My Computer" in the start menu and then "view system information".

Operating systems are what your computer uses to organize files and run programs. Windows is the most popular and comes in several versions such as Vista, XP, ME, 2000, 98, 95, etc.

There are many kinds of operating systems such as mac os (apple), windows in all its versions by microsoft, linux (an open source and free operating system).

Most operating systems have an option in which you can see which version your are using (and other information) by right clicking on the desktop and choosing properties.

Run Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

Note: If you need to reformat your pc you will need this list to be able to reinstall the needed device drivers and software
