is something that can be cured by praying hard enough or having enough faith?

Or by bringing someone into your life that can cheer you up?

My question comes from some of the answers given to the recent 'do suicides go to hell' question. A lot of people seem to have a misunderstanding of depression. That it is just an inability to cope with life and those with it just need someone to come along and cheer them up. Or that they don't have enough faith in G-d to help them cope.

I have suffered from depression before in my life, and my other half suffers from it greatly. I can say it is an insiduous disease that haunts you, and hunts you. It is not about being unable to cope, but to have your whole world disintergrate and you feel completly helpless.

I am curious to hear from those who believe that G-d can cure depression, or if there are those on here that believe depression is an infliction from Satan etc.

By the way, since this has come up, I never said that I nor any one else in my life have depended solely on prayers to heal depression. So thanks for the advice for getting treatement but it wasn't part of the question. READ!

Also, depression is not just a mental imbalance. That is over simplifing things a bit. There are usually two sides of depression, an experience, and then often times the imbalance caused by such expereince.

Also little known is that the drugs used to treat depression are short term only. Long term use actually harms the patient. Over five years, and the drugs stop working 90% of the time after causing your body to stop producing any kind of normal level of seratonin.

SSRI's (selective seratonine reuptake inhibitators) don't really help you in the long run. They just make your body use the minimal seratonine in your brain instead of helping your body to make more.

Many would be surprised at the high numbers of people on meds and still suffering.

No God or Goddess can cure depression, if that was the case then we would never get sick or die from any diseases at all including cancer.. All one would need would be faith...

Depression has absolutely nothing to do with a fictitious character, namely Satan, depression is real...

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life.

Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us.

Depression Free Method?

I think for those with faith it can help - I know that turning back to God has helped my mom greatly. For some faith doesn't come so easily though... so I think it is hit and miss and depends on the person more.

I don't feel it is an infliction from Satan persay, but I do think those that are devoid of faith - and I don't mean just Christianity -but devoid of faith in something and more specifically those that walk away from faith - they are more prone to depression.

I don't look at it from a demonic standpoint, but depression itself dwells in the darkest part of our souls and without some light to bring the person back it can be very hard to do it solely with humanitarian efforts or willpower.

Every person though has their own path- so I fell that prayer can help, but so can meditation and other alternative religions. The key is finding your way back to the light or the universal one.

I have been diagnosed with clinical depression, and did attempt suicide, before being put on the right medication. I have this to say (ABSOLUTELY NO, just bringing good things into your life) is not enough. If you have a chemical imbalance to the brain sometimes the only help is,an anti depressant drug. Does faith in God help ,DEFIANTLY.Until being put on the proper medication,I could find NOTHING to live for. I have to take anti seizure medication for Epilepsy. This medication causes a chemical imbalance to the brain. I hope this has been helpful.

There are degrees of depression. In the lighter forms, I believe that faith (like any other uplifting social activity) can have a positive effect.

In the heavier forms... not a chance. Deep clinical depression is, to use a religious term, soul-destroying -- it doesn't respond to "people being there for you" or other things that will make a normally sad person feel at least a little bit better. It is a medical condition like cancer or diabetes. I believe that no one who has not been into those depths can really understand what it's like, because that particular state of being is so alien to the normal human mindset.

In more serious forms of depression, proper diagnosis and use of medication is a must, at least in my opinion. In most cases the medication use will only be needed for a few months, but it can make all the difference in the world and it can definitely save lives.

I am not against anyone going to the Dr for depression and if they need to go they should. However that being said you asked for opinions, here is mine. I believe some depression comes from spirits. I do believe you can be delivered from those spirits and so therefore God can heal you of depression. I am not just talking about possession of evil spirits, they can attach them selves to you. I believe if that happens it could cause a chemical imbalance. I know there are definitely clinical types of depression such as post pardom... I just don't believe all depression is clinical.

Depression is a disease like high blood pressure or diabetes. Praying (no matter what "they" say) and "someone to make you feel better" won't cure any of them.

Anyone who believes that depression is an infliction from the devil is living in the wrong century.

note-- Squirt and Sean need help or they're going to be statistics. I hope they find out before it's too late.

I have been struggling with this one myself recently. I have had severe medical problems that have plunged me into a deep depression. Even though I am a Christian, my thoughts have turned toward a strong desire to end my earthly pain.

Like myself, I am sure that others who suffer from true severe depression -not your ordinary case of the blues - can not simply "snap out of it" with a dose of cheeriness from another person. Wish that it were that simple. In fact, I purposely cut myself off from other people.

I can say without going into too much detail that one of the things that stopped me from ending myself was the uncertainty of my afterlife privledges. As I said, I am a Christian and I want to go to heaven. As much as I feel pained here on Earth, I really don't want to spend eternity in pain and suffering.

I do pray. I pray a lot. I scream out my prayers through tears and pain sometimes. What comforts me is knowing that God is there for me. I believe the Bible. It does not say that things will be easy here on Earth. It says to persevere. Things were never easy for anyone in the scriptures. Those people suffered! Look at Job!

I trust in Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

I wouldn't feel comfortable telling somebody else, "All you have to do is pray really really hard and then you'll be cured." I don't believe that because that's the equivilant to telling a wheelchair bound person that they could walk if they just prayed hard enough. I don't know a scripture for that.

Hebrews 19:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Blessings to all of us who suffer with illnesses. I pray right now that our Lord will give us His strength to overcome. Amen.

Grace unto you, and peace,
from God our Father and the Lord JC.

Depression = Oppression
The root cause of all oppression is legalism: the law.
JC went about healing all "oppressed" of the devil(law).
Such is mentioned in Acts: New Testament: Holy Bible.

Since law is both natural abuse and spiritual abuse,
there's both a natural and spiritual cure for depression.
Flax seed oil capsules: the natural cure, no side effect.
Flush all law as dung: the spiritual cure, no sides effect.
For Grace neither makes sides wars, nor takes a side.

Doctors tend to use depression ppl as cash cows, or as
guinea pigs, pushing pills having Horeb-bull side effects.

I'd send you a link, but the Yahoo cops blocked me.
Advance Search 'Depression is Oppression' on Y.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

I am trying my best not to be upset with you. When referring to the Almighty why do you say G-D? What does that mean? It's a wonder why you can't get out of depression! If you can't accept God Almighty Yahweh/Jehovah, Jesus/Yeshuah, and the Holy Spirit; you are not going to feel better. You need to believe and have FAITH, HOPE, & LOVE. But the greatest of these is LOVE. With God all things are possible.
You also need to go see a Holistic Doctor because you and your husband is lacking a nutrient that needs to be put back into your body. With the right herbs and a total body cleansing, you will be cured. Ask Yahweh/Jehovah God to lead you to the right "Holistic Doctor" (all natural Doctor).
