Do you pronounce it as "Ant" or as it is spelled "Aunt". My fiance and I have and ongoing argument on how to pronounce it properly. She is from the north east and I am from the north west, but we both grew up in NC.

I pronounce it as "Ant", and most people I know do likewise. We're from Toronto, Canada. Although, I do know one person who says "Aunt".

I say "aunt" and I am from NC. However, I believe all my friends say "ant".

My friend actually told this really bad joke to me and a friend once. She asked us to think of a word that describes a female that has four letters and ends with -unt. UNFORTUNATELY my friend and I were not in the right state of mind, and you should be able to guess what word we came up with. (Hint: it wasn't aunt) Anyway, the friend asking the question laughed, and knew that always got people. She then said the answer should have been "ant".

And stupid me said: Ant? That only has three letters. Heh... needless to say, they say ant and I say aunt.

i say it ant. i'm from wisconsin. i think the "awnt" pronunciation is an east coast and british thing. most Americans and Canadians say ant.

but i hope you know that theres no question between these pronunciations of which is "proper" tell your fiancée she's saying it fine. this is nothing to argue about. oh by the way, your fiancée is a woman and you spelled that word with only one E. can't you spell it properly? LOL j/k

I'm in Cleveland and I pronounce it Ant, but I do know some people who pronounce it with the U in it - Unt. Which I think sounds silly.

There is no proper way. Though I also pronounce it "ant", "aunt" is also correct. It's like ee-ther or eye-ther (either). Any pronounciation works. Same with "en-vel-ope" and "aunvolope" (envelope.) It just depends on where you were raised and who raised you.

Also, I'm in Colorado.
