It's just like ICU said; if you ask Italian who lives in Italy the majority will reply they are "catholics"; but in fact it's just some sort of "burocratic reply". They lable themselves as catholic just because they're born in Italy. But as for being "strong believers", definitely not. That definition can only apply to less than 10% of population (also according to ISTAT, Italian official institute for statistics), and is decreasing year by year.

Since I am italian I am the best qualified here to answer.
People have the misconception that becasue the Vatican is next door that italians are religious.
IT IS QUITE THE OPPOSTITE, no one cares about church , people go there for tradition on funerals, weddings, or holidays, that is IT.
IT IS JUST ABOUT TRADITION, but people cannot care less about religion. It is disappearing, as people are getting fed up more and more about the hypocrisy of the churches.
IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE ME , TRY TO LIVE THERE, ITALIANS ARE NOT RELIGIOUS AT ALL.

Italians, as in people who live in Italy, are not as devout to the Catholic Church as one might think. In general, they are more superstitious then religious.

I would imagine Italy has strong Catholic roots so it may have a strong belief in God, You would have to check out Italian Government Census results.
