you have to pay whatever sales tax is charged in the state you register the car in, typically the state you reside in. For example, NJ sales tax is 7% and if i go into PA to buy a car, I could title the car in PA, and pay PA sales tax, and hassle with the DMV people because of my address, or come back to Jersey to title the car, and pay Jersey's tax.

It is generally a sales and use tax. This tax does NOT have to be paid unless the car is brought into or registered in your state. An out-of-state dealer will normally collect the sales tax due at the point of sale, although some do rarely collect for a neighboring state. What has been paid will count against anything owed in your home state.

UNLESS

You purchase and register the car in another state while living there and then bring it back with you. There are minimum times involved, so check with your home state.

You may not have to pay sales tax, especially if it's a private sale, not a dealer........but....when you register your car in your own state, where there is a tax......you'll have to pay a 'use' tax equal to the sales tax you would have paid in-state.......less any tax you can prove you paid at the sale.......

Depends on the state, most don't. Washington state will, even if you bought the vehicle years before and already paid a tax in the state you moved there from.

Yes, you have to pay tax to get it titled and registered.

If it was a gift, then it must say it on the title or affidavit of sale...

If you don't transfer ownership, you will eventually get pulled over and face hefty ticket and fines......

you will have to check with the tax office that you will be registering the car with, a phone call will let you know,,also keep in mind that depending where you live, some counties make you have to get the car inspected before you can register it

Where ever you register the vehicle and put on plates, they will ask the purchase price and you will pay the taxes at that time.
