I was told that this was a dominance issue, and that a dog that sees you as his "alpha" would not do so. One of my Golden Retrievers does this all the time, usually when I am too busy to give her the attention she wants, like when I am trying to talk with a guest in my home, or when I am getting ready for work. It SEEMS she does it to control me, but that's just MY dog. I do try to discourage it, though, as she has scratched my face many times trying to get her way (she usually trys to "paw" my knee or my shoulder). Watch to see what context she uses this behavior, it will probably clue you in to why she is doing it.

Ok it's very simple my dog does this too and this is my idea why. Every time i sit down by her or visa versa she always puts her paw on me. i believe this is a sign of affection. She does not want me to leave her which is why she grabs a hold of whatever she can. So in the end YOUR DOG JUST LOVES U

These lovey dovey answers are what all dog owners wish their dog was doing. However, your dog is showing dominance over you. DO NOT let your dog do this. Remove her paw and if she replaces it, continue until she stops. If she does not stop you can flip her onto her back and place your hand on her chest between her two front paws, try and do this every day to show your dominance over her.

My dog used to do that with her paw and her head. When I would pet her, she would stop and wag her tail. But if I stopped petting her, she would do it again. I think she did it because she knew it resulted in attention. It was a way for her to get affection and show some too.

My puppy does the same thing! I think she does it so she knows I'm not going anywhere and leaving her alone. She HATES being alone. She'll do it too if she wants attention. That's probably why your dog is doing it. Make her happy and give her some attention when she does it, unless you want to discourage it.

It can be 1 of 2 main things..
1. a trained reaction. the dog put her paw on you and you gave her attention, so she knows it works..
2. If she just does it over and over and does not seem to be looking for attention, then it can be a dominance issue.. she is basicly saying "your mine, you cupcake, I am the boss".. I would not suggest letting her do this., flick her paw lightly with your finger and tell her no.. and move her paw off of you..
If she wants to get your attention, there needs to be other ways.. putting her head under your hand, or head on your feet or playing cutely at your feet..
Try this, with her laying down on the ground, lay down next to h er, and lay with your arm over her, does she freak at this or try to get out from under the arm, but once out from under will stay laying with you., If you cover her paw with your hand, cupping it without much pressure at all, does she remove her paw and put it on top of yours? IFeither, it is probably a dominance issue..
Need to remind her who is Alpha in your pack., You eat THEN you feed her.. give her the first piece or so out of your hand, then put rest in bowl. YOU as owner, go thru doors in and out of house first. If you just open it to let her in from outside, insist she does something to be let in (have her sit instead of coming in when she wants to, then after a few seconds, you let her know she can come in.)
Dont let her up on the bed or furniture (if you already allow her) without your express permission. If she sleeps in same bed as you, you get in bed first, then call her up.. let her know that she is getting this BY your Grace....
Dominance issues can be kinda funny with small dogs, but as they get larger, it can get a little dangerous, Especially whgen you have guests that the dog tries to "lord" over or kids.. the dog might decide to up the alpha bit and start biting or nipping.

she's claiming ownership over you.
she is clearly marking her territory.
don't let her do this.
it is ok to pet her, scratch her belly, etc.
when my dog puts her head in my hand, or under my hand, she tells me she wants to be petted. or when she places her paw on my lap, that she wants attention, or is hungry.
however, whenever she leans on you, steps on you, these are signs of disrespect, and that she owns you.
If you don't believe me, go and visit the dog behavior expert, Mr. Cesar Milan at his website.
if anyone knows dogs, it's him.
