I read recently that you can only have 3 children, including your own, to watch at one time in your home with out being licensed.

What about if I were to have an additional adult as a helper, is it 3 total or 3 per adult?

Does any one know what the cost of getting lisenced is?

I should probably include that I am considering a small program in my home where the kids will only be there 2-3 hours at a time. I have several years of childcare experience. But not in my own home. (I am looking into moving back to Texas and would be doing it there)

Each state regulates their own child care licensing procedures and regulations. I live in Michigan and have been a licensed child care provider in my home for 20 years. In Michigan, it is illegal to regularly care for any unrelated children in your home without a license. I have a family child care license that permits me to care for up to 6 children at any one time, but must follow age ratios as well. For instance, I can not have 6 children under the age of 18 months, I can only have 2 at any given time. The most children ages 18-29 months old I can have at one time is 4. I am not sure I remember how much the licensing fee is exactly, but it is minimal, less than $50 and my license is good for 3 years. I don't need a helper unless I have a group child care home which can take care of up to 12 children with a helper 14 years of age or older. The Department of Human Services in your state should have a website with a posting of rules and regulations for child care homes.

once you "hire" other adults to help watch children it becomes a "home day care" and you need to be licensed for that. Now I am not sure how much it costs to get licensesd but it does take some classes and paperwork and following guidelines to do so. It is not simply a matter of paying money and getting licensed. You can babysit as many relatives as you want but once you start bringing in other children you can only have I thought it was 4 but they may have dropped it since I looked into it. There are a lot of restrictions about how big the house must be, what to offer etc. so you need to be commited before you make a descison. Good luck.

Your state has specific guidelines. It doesn't cost anything to get licensed in CA-that said you have to take CPR/first aid and health and be fingerprinted. All done on the weekends. You have to childproof your home and your state has a checklist. With a license its 4 under two years of age per one adult(total kids including your own) OR six over 2 years of age including your own-the max you can take on over two with a second fingerprinted assistant is 12.

In Texas, you can watch up to six children, including your own, without a license.

three children will be maximum, much better if an adult is related to the children... when youre out, you have an ease of mind
