Everyone always cares so much about what happens to us when we die... I guess being an atheist I don't care that much... I just think that's the end... However nobody ever really wonders what we were before we were born....

So my question is...

What were we before we were born? Nothing... non-existant... a tree... a different person....

What do you think we were??

I like the tree idea! ;)

*sigh* everyone takes everything so litterly... I don't believe I was a tree... It is just an entertaining thought... I think I just didn't exist... Until the sperm met the egg and well you know the rest...

Greetings...

Muslims believe that prior to anyone's birth, or the creation of any item/material, that person or item has already existed within the realm of God's knowledge and it is encrypted within a master source book known as "Luh Mahfuz".

Anything that is yet to materialise, or has materialised would be recorded there akin to a blueprint. When a command is issued by God, only then the creation would begin to proceed. In the case of humans, our souls would commence creation upon that command. The moments where we reside prior to birth is called the realm of arwah. Then that soul would descent to the womb where he / she is fated to attach to its casing in the fetus form. Upon birth we grow up and learn all the things we knew in this mortal world known as alam syahadah (syahadah realm). It would be quite difficult to explain the true nature of the soul. However, this could be grasped on the surface by the fact that we continue to perceive things and feel certain sensation whenever we dream in sleep. Mental consciousness is most suppressed during deep sleep, then how do we explain such sensation? It is no other than the sensation / perception grasped by the soul.

Once death comes upon us, the body is left behind and the soul is carried over to the realm of barzakh and was granted according to the deeds of our lifetime-it could be in terms of reward or punishment, pending the day of final judgement.

The day upon final judgement would be known as the realm of akhirat where the final destination for our soul would be determined whether condemned to hell or rewarded with heaven.

I'm not sure how u would accept this kind of viewpoint....at least this represents what Muslims believe of the pre and post life conditions. Hopefully u would find it interesting though.. :-)

The atoms in your body have been a part of so many organisms in the past, that you would be more right than wrong to say that you have, at some point, been Cleopatra, and Winston Churchill, and Aristotle, and a T Rex, and a salmon, swimming upstream, and a sunflower, and...In fact, all the atoms in your body right now are not the ones you were born with. For one thing, you have trillions more. Also, eating, respiring, and other functions are constantly replacing your atoms.

What you call your 'self' never existed before you were born, and it won't ever exist again after you die. Our consciousness (what some call our "soul") is just the net effect of all the neurons in our nervous system working in unison. Just like other networks of relationships (like the internet, or a friendship), consciousness has no physical location or substance. You know what it is, but you can't weigh it, touch it, see it, smell it, hear it...It is an abstraction, a concept, and it's constantly changing.

I was have been many people in the past. Your body is new at birth and your soul is a separate entity at first which doesn't usually even begin to incorporate into your body until after 40 days and then it takes about 4 years for the soul and your mind and body to fully meld together. The way I see it is best described in Micheal Newtons book Journey of souls and Destiny of souls. As you get older there will become some things that you will just know. Many religions answer this question with a belief in reincarnation. I believe in reincarnation. So I believe that I've lived other lives before I was born into this one (no, I don't think that I was ever anyone famous or important). Between incarnations, I believe that my soul was in the Otherworld, which is a place where I feast with my ancestors and deities, review my lessons learned and prepare for my next journey.

In general, I believe that humans incarnate into other humans, but I believe that it is definitely possible that we can choose to incarnate into other living things. I think it would be possible to be a part of a tree, rock, cloud, or drop of water for a short period of time.

So I guess that I don't worry much about death either, but for a different reason.

I am obsessed with really, really, old big trees but... I think we were a spark, an energy mass or whatever, that was born on Earth in the form of a child.

My youngest son started talking in complete sentences at a very early age.

It was quite a novelty and adults were intrigued and surprised by his ability to communicate. Even his doctors.

Early on he began telling us about the place he was at before he came to be in our family. At first I thought that he was just making up stories, but I listened just the same. Then one evening before bed he said something that really made me wonder. He told me about something that had happened to him before he was born into our family.

I asked him when this had happened and he said it happened when I was a man like you dad. He went on to say not as old as you are now, I was a lot older. My hair was white and my skin was wrinkly.

This was too much. I was sure that he was making it up.

I began to try to get him to make up a story for me but he seemed unable to understand what I was asking him to do. After several tries I realized that although he was fully capable of relating something that had actually happened to him he was not at all able to make up a story and tell it in a coherent lineal manner that made sense.

He had by this time made several references to the place where the babies where before they are born and about the time he came to see his mother and I before he was born to see if we were the ones he wanted to have for his parents.

He got none of these ideas from my wife or I because these are not ideas we believed in or had ever heard about.

Only later did I do research and find other references to the things that he was telling us.

He is 14 now and can still remember telling us about these things but he says that most but not all of the actual memories of what he was describing have faded.

I'm not sure what to make of this and I am not trying to lie to you or convert you to believe anything. It just happened.

Love and blessings Don

I'm really not too concerned about what happens to me after I die. I'm not a Christian just so I can go to heaven. I think the relationship on earth that I have with God is worth so much that I would choose it even if I still had to go to hell.

If you are saying you believe in the possible of reincarnation (being a tree in another life) than you are indeed not an atheist.

Our bodies are formed in our mother's womb (I'm sure you know this part, lol)...

Our souls, on the other hand, are forged beneath the throne of God, and come from the highest Heaven, before incarnating on earth and joining with our physical bodies...
