I'll give you a simple answer: YES.
Sit however close you like, and whatever is comfortable for viewing. There is no set distance!
I know people who have had 42" Plasmas in Caravans sittiing a few feet away. They loved it!

All the best.

The rule of thumb I've seen depends on whether you have a 720p set or 1080i/p.

For 720, the viewing distance can be 4 times the screen height (1/2 the diagonal of a 16:9 set). For 1080, it can be 3 times the screen height. So that would be 104 inches for 720 and 78 inches for 1080.

The ideal spot to view is 2 times the TV diameter. In the case of a 52 inch TV, 104 inches is ideal. 9 feet = 108 inches. I'd say you just about nailed the sweet spot.

Well it won't damage your eyes. Is your TV 480, 720, or 1080? Naturally, the lower the resolution the farther away you're going to want to sit. However, for a 52 inch, even in 1080, I wouldn't get much closer than 9 ft. You should check your tv's documentation, they usually tell the optimum viewing distance.

Sitting that close to a 52 inch tv will not allow you see everything without constantly moving either your eyes and/or your head. Increase the distance until you can see the whole screen without moving your eyes or head.
