My friend is visiting LA and she's planning on getting around using public transportation. Let's say she checks out a show in Hollywood at night and plans to get back to Long Beach by Metro Rail after that. Is it safe to ride the Metro Rail during late hours? I think I heard somewhere that the blue line is kind of (for the lack of a better word) ghetto. I've never been on one so I wouldn't know, but I am concerned.

Any thoughts?

If you ask my friend who works for MTA he'll tell you not to ride any trains or buses from stories he's heard. It hasn't stopped me from riding them. I've riden the Blue line around 10:30/11pm and haven't had any trouble. Sometimes a homeless guy hops on begging for cash or some idiot will try hitting on you(any time of day). There's usually plenty of people on the trains so your friend shouldn't have anything to worry. Much like the other guy said..there's security(although they aren't always around). I have never felt unsafe on a bus or train in LA. Just make sure your friend knows about the times trains and buses stop running because not all of them run too late at night.

Taking Public transortation is cheaper than renting a car.

I live in Long Beach and took the Blue Line to the LA Convention Center and I felt safe, then again I was traveling during the day. Considering some of the neighborhoods she is going thru are the worst in LA I can see how the trains might pick up some interesting characters at night.
We only had to deal with a homeless man sitting at the far end of the car that we could smell at the front end of the car.
Some of the neighborhoods you go thru on the Blue Line look like they should be in a Third World country or a bombed out Middle Eastern city. It's a good education on what a huge part of LA looks like.

Note: the Blue Line originates at Broadway and Long Beach Blvd in downtown Long Beach. That is where I rode it from.

The Blue Line is safe as long as you don't get off at any of the stations between, say, Slauson and Sixth Street in Long Beach. If rowdy people board the train at any time of day, it is not a good idea to make eye contact with them. Ignorance is bliss.
Also be aware that some of the Blue Line trains do not go all the way into downtown Long Beach nor do they originate there for travel back to the 7th Street Metro station after a ceratin hour of the night, so have the schedule handy and ride accordingly.

LoL

The Blue line is not so-called "ghetto", although it passes by South Los Angeles or Compton;however, that doesn't mean that is ghetto and dangerous. I live in Compton. I have ridden the Blue twice and I was pretty amaze. It's not dangerous. In the Compton Station is pretty safe;however in
Rosa Parks(Watts or LA) and 103st (Watts)you would see the real "ghetto". It's not dangerous;however, you would see many dangerous individual. As result that its patrol by Los Angeles County Sheriff is not a destination were criminal are located. Los Angeles County Sheriff is not a glamorous job.
This are some advice I give you:

1.Don't wear jewelry.
2.Don't show that you are new and scared.
3.Don't reallied on the cops. (They are rare to see them on the Metro).
4.Be were there are people(Old folks,kids,ladies)

Why do you use the word ghetto? Do you know what it means? All the lines are safe due to the under cops riding and the cameras at every station and on the trains. The Blue Line is not Ghetto.

yes metro have sheriffs and fare inspectors
patrol the subway as well as checking tickets
as well
if your friend is going to Hollywood
she would first have to take the Blue Line from Long Beach
to the 7th and Metro station then transfer to Red Line
to Hollywood,
the blue line travels though what people *think* is ghetto although its not really
for the return trip to Long Beach your friend must
leave be on the Red Line by 12:20am to make the last connection to the Blue Line..
also she would have to pay $1.25 for each train each way
or you could get day pass for $5.00

Not much in the way of public transportation in Los Angeles is 100% safe. Just be sure she is "aware". Keep her eyes open and do not put her purse in plain sight. Do not sit alone for instance back in a corner. Stay around people that look safe. Like other women. Just of careful. Do not wear jewelry.
