I say curse. It's mad awkward.

Trust me, you never know where these confessionals are going. Sometimes it is someone in genuine need, sometimes it is someone looking to rob you, rip you off, or sexually proposition you.

Some dude started spilling his guts to my boy and then the wacko tried to stab him. Ruined the man's leather coat, lol.

Follow your gut, but be clear on boundaries and don't show vulnerability.

Being a priest it's part of my job description, not five a week, but numerous times 24/7. Blessings and curses are two sides of the same coin. Being trusted has it's costs, but the benefits are out of this world! A lot as to do with knowing that we're not the ones who ultimately hold either the bag or the strings.

I know the feeling, Patrick - I've had that happen more times than I can count. It's been that way for me since high school, when here I was, this "floater" that could fit into any group, having the head cheerleader and one of the top theater kids both confessing their - at the time - dire secrets to me.

I've often wondered why me? Part of it- for both you and I - must be that we keep other people's business to ourselves when told about it. Also, we must have the personality, look, demeanor that allows others to come up and releive themselves of their burdens.

I almost wonder if that's akin to being a sin eater...

i too have one of those faces that the world & its mother want to tell me all their woes.
i usually listen, make reassuring/concerned/pitiful faces in all the right places.
then it's in one ear & out the other.
nothing i've ever been told was worth hanging on to for more than 20 seconds or so & i walk away thanking my lucky stars that i'm not them!
if it makes them feel better even for just a little while, where's the harm?
:)
