How come on YA there appear to be so many atheists, but in the real world I feel like I'm the only one?

Maybe it has to do with me being in Georgia. The first thing they ask you is "have you found a church yet?"

Atheists are NOT evenly geographically distributed.

Georgia? Yeah, I'd think that would be pretty theistic, on the whole.

Also, proportions on this site do NOT match reality (as I've noticed in a LOT of ways).

Tiny minorities tend to be even noisier here than in the world in general.

I mean, the proportion of YA folk who think all African Americans should be either exiled, re-enslaved, or murdered is a LOT higher than the population in general (really tiny).

There are probably shavings of the general population at each point that leads to posting here: Have the equipment and money to be on-line; have the savvy to be on-line; have an interest in a Q&A site; post.

At each point, the proportion of atheists is probably higher than the general population. (We're a wee, tiny proportion of the population at large.)

Since Atheist don't have a weekly meeting sometimes it's difficult to find others.. Try a local college library (concentrate your search on the Philosophy and Science sections)..

Try getting a small button, pin, necklace with an Atheist theme, other Atheist might see it and say "Hey I am Atheist too."

Type in Atheist Jewelry in any browser there are several products available..

You are not the only one, you just need to be a bit creative and you will meet people with the same views..

There tend to be more atheists wherever you find academic or scientific centers. Big cities, universities, laboratories, high tech industries...those tend to be where the atheists go to work. There are probably a lot of atheists in Atlanta, maybe even some church going atheists. Some of us keep our views private in the public world just because it makes life easier.

It's hard to be Atheist in the real world...because of all the Christians and Theists who will condemn you (and even make you lose your job sometimes) if you say you're different than they are...it's sad. Anyway...you're not the only one...I'm an Atheist but you haven't got me there yet 'cause I'm still in High School...:(

We don't really go around talking about atheism. We don't have a church, or a club, or anything like that. There are also a lot of atheists who aren't really open about it, because they're afraid to be in this country. (The U.S.) It's becoming more and more open now, though. I think you'll start to see a lot more atheists out there. You see it much more now in places like college campuses.

What is an atheist? Do atheist exist in all religions or only in the Christian religion?????? Is a "moral" atheist likely to be as kind and as honest as a Christian?? There might be billions of atheists in the world. I dont feel anyone has a final answer for your question. You have to decide what is best for you.

They're all down at the local bar, hiding in the dimness of the lighting and watching you through eyes veiled in cigarette smoke.

At least, to my romantic mind.

Then, when a barroom brawl breaks out and the antagonists are found to be Irish Catholics, they can all go home nodding to themselves and saying: "HA! I KNEW there was no GOD!"

Trust me, you aren't the only one.

It's just in the light of day we are afraid we might have to face the Grand Inquisitor and his thumb screws and dunking stools.

If you are extra good I'll show you the secret handshake.

We are the quiet ones that go about our business day in, day out, without causing any fuss. We are your neighbors, the ones around the block, the community leaders. What you won't see is us going to services, but you will see us volunteering to help our fellow human beings.

This could be a regional problem. Are you in Nebraska? Seriously, though, here in DC there are plenty of atheists.
