Calling on the spirits of your ancestors for guidance in the form of dreams is a practice which is part of many religions. If done respectfully and mindfully it is generally safe. However if you are new to your practice, I would advise a mentor that is still on this plane of existance.

Calling your ancestors - especially if you are already close to them - is a GREAT idea to help youwith the craft.

Personally...i believe that if they wanted to help they would already be doing so. Which in your case they may well be( ask me about that).
I just feel that they should be honored and respected and left alone. But thats just me....

asking grandma to help you with knitting is normal with embroidery and other crafts

If you do, make sure you tell EVERYONE WHO COMES WITHIN SHOUTING DISTANCE about it. Because really, what's the point if people don't know how cool and alternative you are, right?
