A shoebox studio apartment in a nice Manhattan neighborhood will cost you $1200 a month. Try Queens. Bayside, Flushing, Forest Hills are all nice areas to live. For $1200 a month, you could get one or two bedrooms depending on the neighborhood.

Well Queens isn't really a much of a city area; it's mostly urban suburbs (2 family houses; apt buildings) and avenues of strip malls (stores are on the streets).
The only city-like areas in NYC are Manhattan & Brooklyn (certain areas).
The rent for BOTH areas which are really urbanated are about the same; no less than $500 if it's a really dingy studio (barely livable lol) and no less than 800$ if its a clean studio (not airy)
The closer you are to pretty scenes the more expensive it gets. In Brooklyn and Manhattan; if you're near the harbor/ocean rent is at least $2000 a month for a SMALL studio. Same goes if you're in an area with a beautiful view of a park/skyline.
If you don't mind living in an inner-city urban area in Brooklyn and Manhattan than you can probably find a nice decent 1 bedroom for no more than $1000.
And if you're not up for paying these high prices you can search on Craigslist.com and see if there is ANYONE looking for a room mate.. or you can search the classifieds.. I'm 100% certain you'll find someone wanting a room mate and you would get a REALLY big break with the rent since it would be split.
I really suggest staying away from Queens & the Bronx. Both areas have the highest crime rate in comparision to other NYC areas. The safest place would be Staten Island; a ferry ride away from the city (20 minutes) BUT its like living in a hard-core suburb.. either 1 family houses or sky rise apt buildings (mostly old aged retirees).

Studios/1 bedrooms in Manhattan range in price from $1000/mo. to $5000/mo. or more, depending on the neighborhood. Pricing in most of New York is typically as follows: $1000 is a base price for a studio, add $500 per bedroom. You'll do better in Brooklyn or Queens; you might be able to get a studio for $800/mo.

1 bedroom studio is Manhattan, upper west side, about 1100-1200 in Queens considerably less probably like 800-1000.
It really depends on what neighborhood you are looking into moving to.

Manhattan at least $2,000 a month
Queens at least $1,200 a month.
So probably think about $2,500 for Manhattan and about $1,500 for Queens at the bare bottom.

If you want to live somewhere even more expensive, try West End London. You could become a West End Girl.
