Not sure what this has to do with etiquette...
Why don't you try the local shelter or Humane Society? They often have many kittens up for adoption.

Firstly, just going to throw out there that you should only adopt a kitten if you're really sure you want the responsibility, especially after it grows up. Think really hard, because you don't want to be stuck with an unloved pet. It's a lose-lose situation.
Secondly, totally not etiquette.
Thirdly, don't go to a breeder. Terrible idea. By far the best option is the pound. They have low adoption fees, they will help you spay or neuter your kitty, and you will be saving an animal when otherwise you would just be supporting the contribution of breeders to over-population.

look in the newspaper or on petfinder.com
check out ads at grocery / convenience stores and other stores where ppl can post free/for sale ads.
you still need to take it to the vet - i never trust ppl unless they give me the vet's name and a health record of the animals visits/shots etc

Look behind any Chinese restaurant and you'll find all the cats you could ever want! You can find them inside Chinese restaurants too but those ones are dead and cooked and mixed in with veggies and sweet-n-sour sauce.....
