Well if you lived on Long Island, in Yonkers or in Jersey you wouldn't be living in NYC.

I live in the Bronx and it's fine here so I pick the Bronx.

Not all of Yonkers is like the Bronx.

Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk are not boroughs they are suburban counties.

I live in Brooklyn and I love it.

Long Island, Yonkers, and Jersey aren't really parts of the city proper. There's a different vibe in the suburbs.

Astoria (in Queens), Williamsburg, Park Slope, Greenpoint (all in Brooklyn), or maybe Hoboken, NJ (it's clean safe, easy to get to NYC, it just doesn't have as much character as the other neighborhoods)

I live in NW NJ and it is quite rural which is great for raising a family. I guess it depends what you are looking for and where your job is. Trying to get into NYC from here is 2 hours each way during rush hour.
