The Greek symbols for fish come out as ICTHUS, which translates to "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior." The Darwin fish symbol comes from an early Christian tradition where one Christian (in hiding from the persecution of the Romans) would draw an arc in the sand or dirt. Another Christian, showinhg his solidarity or to confirm that he is a Christian, would draw the other arc that completed the fish. As for the addition of Darwin: I cannot honestly give you an answer on that one.

Jesus told his followers to be come fishers of men. (To preach the good news of the kingdom.)
The symbol of the fish and the cross are symbols some Christians use but the Bible warns against such things.

From what I've heard, the five letters in the Greek word for "fish" spell out an acronym: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. Something like IXOYE.

Ichthyus.

It is derived from piscis vessica and is an older pagan symbol appropriated by the early Xtians to be a secret pass-symbol to commemorate the feeding of the masses and the concept to be fishers of men. They used it to keep from being persecuted by the Romans during the times of persecution.

In the early days the christian symbol they drew in the dirt to silently tell others they were Christians, was a fish sign. The catholics took it as their own to show other catholics they are too.
It was dangerous to admit in public who you were. They sought out Christians and slaughtered them or fed them to the lions.

when christians were being persecuted, they would draw a half circle in the dirt. if the other person was a christian, they would also draw a half circle, creating the fish shape. if not, they wouldn't know what just happened.
