Avoid the santa monica/venice areas and go for malibu its so much cleaner that people actually surf and swim there. There are also life guards on duty.

It is known as BEACH TAR and you are not going to escape from it. You can thank the oil companies for all of it. I live in Malibu and grew up in Huntington and the stuff is everywhere, unfortunately. You cannot avoid it at any southern california beach. Read the link below to LEARN about what it really is. I just stepped in a huge pile of it the other day here on the prettiest beach in Malibu, so those who say it ain't in Malibu or Zuma do NOT know what they are talking about!

If you want some clean water-you're going to have to travel to Orange County. Preferably Newport or Laguna. Maybe you've heard of the Wedge. That's great surfing. You could also head past Malibu and surf Zuma. Clean beaches and great surfing.

Go north or south for the cleaner of the beaches.

Generally, the best waves are down around Huntington beach in Orange County.

I'd say Santa Monica beach... it was really nice and clean when I went there last time. Plus, there's a pier right next to it, which was also nice and very entertaining, and not to mention 3rd Street Promanade across from the beach :) I like it there because it's more than just a beach!

Yes, actually Venice Beach was on Yahoo's List of Most Polluted Beaches in the US.

If you don't want tar on your feet, go to cleaner beaches in more residential areas like Malibu or Santa Monica.

Try Malibu, Zuma, Sta Monica they are all good. Sorry oil from time to time but check the purity with the local Municipality and the Life Guards.

Try Point dume. It is a great beach. Clean and no bad people. I also recomend Zuma beach right across Point dume. I love it there and there are great waves to catch there. Very Safe
