my in laws want to buy a camera for the computer so they can see there grandaughter in action.. what is this?

You need a webcam and a microphone. The webcam is for the video, the microphone for the audio.

Check the webcam mounting. Some are only for laptops, some for the desk, and some are universal mount.

Most laptops have a mic built-in. Most desktops you'll need to add a mic or maybe a headset.

you will want a webcam for this but there is another alternative.
if you use a camcorder you can video your daughter then send it to them over the internet. there are a few programs out there where you can send a video email but one i found really good that you can have unlimited video on is:

you can take as long as a video you will like then upload it onto photobucket, then send them the link to watch the video. Birthday, first walk, talk, crawl, stinky diaper,etc... it is a great way to send video where emails only go for so long of an attachment.

You need to buy a webcam. Logitech make some very good models...some are expensive, others quite cheap. Many have an inbuilt microphone...
