What an interesting question! I am agnostic and my mother is an atheist, and we both find religion fascinating. Atheists are probably genuinely curious about where a devoted Christian's faith comes from, since it is an experience they can't relate to. They probably want a deeper understanding of each religion's lessons, and they have likely have gained the same wisdom in their life from a non-religious source. Just remember, atheists feel the same way about Christians or any other devout religious group: how can they be so certain?
What I find to be important in life is that we live well, and make decisions that benefit us and the world and people around us. Some people don't need religious guidance to apply this to their lives, and that should be okay. You may find it impossible to accept that non-Christians don't believe, but us non-Christians find it very hard to believe that you accept that there is no alternative in this infinite universe. There are so many things we don't know about our planet alone, how could we possibly begin to understand the infinite universe around us? How can we say with any certainty that there is one right way to do things and everything else is wrong? What if God is proud that the people of earth have found so many ways to live their lives and express their beliefs and share their love? And if it is possible to live a moral and decent life without being devout, maybe the belief in God isn't the most important issue: it's the belief in the good in humanity and in ourselves.
Just my two cents :)

I think the FundieXians are convinced of their immortality and therefore their superiority in all things.
If we Atheists ask them to question the basis of their faith they feel so threatened and fearful they feel they have to 'fight back' with even more insanity including a literal bible and its theory of creation.
They seem to be quite oblivious to the fact and never quite understand their THEORY is much more incredibly unbelievable than the one put forth by realists and many Atheists.
‘God did it’ is the most primitively stupid thing ever said and really in no saner than saying Thor, Zeus or Allah did it.
See how silly that sounds.
Somehow Fundies have been willing and quite able to become Atheists toward all other gods but one.
Atheists just go one god further.

I don't find that difficult to do at all.
I respect their views and I don't pester them. Maybe long ago in the before time, when I was more full of the HS and all fired up by the power of God, I would have preached as well as anyone, however, even back then I understood very well the feeling that I had before my "conversion" and after my conversion. (I always believed, but after baptism in HS, I believed more). One of the warnings we were given was to not over do it, and I took this seriously. When you are newly baptized in the HS it is VERY difficult to not spout off everywhere about what a fantastic experience it is. I fully understand what happened in the upper room on Pentecost (50 days after the Resurrection). And I fully understand why NOT to overwhelm others who have not had such an experience.

I think it's fun to encounter people different from ourselves. That's one reason YA is so neat. People from all over the world, any viewpoint at all, any economic level. The only thing we for sure have in common is a few spare moments of time (and maybe an addiction1).

Well, it's because we're the people who don't care as long as you don't push anything on us. If you don't, we'll help you through and through(unless you're asking us to kill someone, or do something really time-exhausting, etc.). We tend to be the people who have the answers that don't just say "God did it", because we want to have a direct answer, not an answer that raises dozens of more "unanswerable" questions.

It's hard for us to leave eachother alone. It's a debate of faith vs. logic that will never win. Atheists show the facts and Christians believe what's true to themselves.

Maybe we're more willing to have open discussions. Or maybe our sense of humour is on the cutting edge. Religious people seem to be more dour, and it seems to be a crime if you laugh out loud around them.

persecution of any one is a distructive position and is employment of the destroyer. A person can only serve one master. Either side has "issues" if they are ridiculing anyone for anything.

The standards of polite debate rises and ebbs at R&S. But I hope we don't leave each other alone.
