From the kitten age, cats will get used to certain feeding habits. If you feed them once a day & stick to it they will be used to that. If you feed them 2 x a day they will get used to & expect it. My new kittens got used to being fed when I came home from work. Now anytime I leave for very long at all they think it is time to eat!!! But after awhile they quit meowing and settle back down.

I/3 cup daily would be 1/3 cup total food that day - if you feed twice a day, you'd feed half of the 1/3 cup (or 1/6 cup ) at each meal. However, as a person who has had cats for years, I'm curious as to you being told that amount as it is very small. In a standard dry catfood, like Cat Chow, you'd need about a cup or more of dry food for a 10 lb cat. In a premium cat food, like Science Diet, etc.you generally feed lessl, but 1/3 cup is such a small amount. Please double check the feeding instructions on the bag or consult with your vet to be sure about this. Often daily feeding instructions on a bag are for an average size cat (like 6-8 lbs). Another thought is, allow kitty to free feed for several days, in other words, to eat all he wants, but measure out his food & keep up with the amount he eats over the course of several days, then divide by the number of days to determine an "average" amount he eats. If he looks normal weight, feed that amount per day, if he appears overweight, feed a slight amount less, if he appears underweight give him a bit more (hey, don't laugh, I have a 22 lb cat & he's not fat, just very llong & tall so he's a LARGE boy). Also, sometimes vets give instructions when a cat is a kitten for them to be fed, a certain amount of food, but that amount needs to be adjusted & increased as the cat grows, then at adulthood the amount stays about the same. Hope that helps.

It means that your cat only gets1/3 cup for the whole day. You are right about that not being much food so you may want to ask your vet if that is what you should be giving. I say this because I have a 6yr old cat and she eats a total of 5/8 cup per day and that works fine for her.

That means once per day, but that doesn't sound like much. Is the cat under 8 pounds? I feed my 12 pound and 10 pound cats a combined total of 1 cup per day, which means 1/2 cup each.

No. you can leave a 1/3 cup out all day, or you can give it 1/6 of food in the morning, and the same at night.

I don't think that's enough food. I also think you should be feeding wet food.
Hi
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Please read about cat nutrition.

This is the total daily ration. It's best to divide the amount up and feed it in two portions for a total for 1/3 cup for the entire day.

The poor baby! That's just not enough food. My vet once advised me to feed Poppy 1/3 cup of food per day. Total. I just couldn't do it.
In any case, that's what you've been told as well - 1/3 cup per day.
You say that your cat is 10 pounds which is not that bad, but I assume your vet told you to feed him that much because he needs to lose weight?
If that's the case, I have a much better plan for you.
Toss the dry food and feed him a good quality canned food. Long story short, dry food is full of carbs and is fattening, that's why you've been told to feed so little. That's like going on a starvation diet! It may work eventually but it is NOT healthy.
A good canned food is appropriate food for carnivores. It contains meat-based proteins and keeps them hydrated.
Your cat could eat up to one can per day (6oz) and would lose any needed weight. And his or her overall health would improve as well.
Poppy used to weigh 25 pounds, and this is what I did to get her to lose weight.

It means a million cup for the completed day. split it up into 2 a million/2 cup servings and feed him two times an afternoon. Now, those are in simple terms policies, and not carved in stone to coach to each cat. At 6 months previous, he could want slightly extra desirable than this. yet, if this little guy is a glutton and gobbles all of it up at one time--properly, it relatively is in simple terms too undesirable, he's going to could desire to attend until next feeding time. you provides him some kitty treats to supplement in between. do exactly no longer enhance this quantity to a million cup at each and each feeding or you may wish a brilliant "fatty" on your palms good away. then you certainly'll could desire to spend each and all the extra desirable $$$ to purchase the low calorie, low fat (i'm effective low flavor) stuff with a view to get the load off of him. extra perfect to do it good the 1st time around. wish this helps you.
