I want to be a serious threat in competition. I know it is only my first year but I have high expectations of myself and want to make the CIF meet at Mount Sac.

You should know that 17:21 is a great starting time, and since the cross country season is just getting underway, your time will soon drop to 17 minutes, 16:45 in the coming races. Just keep up with the hard work and continually give 100% effort to the sport. You're going to get to a time that you're going to find hard to break, its different for each person, but keep pushing yourself.

Try to get under 16 minutes but don't do anything that will injure yourself. It isn't worth it. I'd do a range of workouts. One mile. Rest 15 minutes. Then another mile. Rest. Then one more. I'd do 200m sprints, rest 5 minutes between each. Running uphill and downhill is really good training for cross country. But watchout for warning signs of overtraining which include getting naseous, dizzy, or muscle freeze. Talk to your coach. Train with a partner if you can. Keeps up your morale.

Omg. That is like a really fast time. My fastest time in my first year was a 23.59. I seem to just be getting worse too. You are already a threat. Just keep it up!!
