Hi...Sorry to read you have suffered with this for such a long time...I am so glad you are finally seeing your doctor AND ready to accept help with this, well done for taking this first step.
Hopefully your doctor will spend time talking it all through with you and offer some counselling along with possibly some form of medication. Be open adn receptive to his/her suggestions and you will be surprised how you will start to get your life back in order again, how the black fog starts to clear and how you will once again see your way forward in life....however....be patient with yourself...after such a long period of anxiety and depression due maybe to some deep underlying difficulties or traumas, it cant be fixed overnight. Take time NOW to take it slow, remember the Tortoise ALWAYS wins!!....
Go for it !!.....never give up....i wish you all the best !!!!

Are you absolutely sure that it's depression? Many doctors will misdiagnose Bipolar disorder with depression because most people go to the doctor while they're in the depressive swing.

When you get the medication, it'll take about two weeks to start working.

Starting back on the job right after starting a new medication isn't the best idea. The job will add stress and will reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

You will eventually be able to work again but it could be a month or more.

I too have had alot of problems over the years and convinced myself that I could handle it on my own. Untill Aug. 1 when my Mother died. Then I just lost it. Lost all control. I finally had to go to the doctor. He put me on two meds. They are working wonderfully. I am still very upset and saddened, but it is a different feeling when I think about it. I don't break down ALL the time. I still do sometimes. But for the most part I can handle things. I am able to think more clearly on this. For a bit there I literally thought I was going to seriously go insane. I mean, to have the problems I've had, and then my wonderful Mother to pass away, just put me over the edge. So go for it. Today's world is way to stressful to handle. Alot of people need help. Don't be ashamed of it either. It might not work "right" away, but soon enough. I take one for all day use, and one for when that is just not enough and I need alttle boost. Lexapro and Xanax. Not really sure if the Lexapro is working yet, kinda think it's starting to. But I know the Xanax is working. That's the booster one. So, get some help. It will make you feel so much better. Good luck to you.

You do not need medication to feel better. You need friends and family to help you. Instead of hiding the fact that you are not well, just open up to them. Just that will help immensely. Then start doing things that make you feel good about yourself. Start exercising more, start volunteering for a cause you care about. Make sure you do something every day that makes you feel like a better person. Soon you will not believe the difference. You will be more confident and happier. The meds will just make you feel more confused, lethargic, anxious, sick... and the list goes on. They have no idea how the meds will affect you. They have to try them out, give them time to "build up in your system" and meanwhile you feel the same or worse. Then they might not work, you could spend forever just waiting, or upping doses over and over, and literally you can spend the rest of your life searching for "the right medication." If you are religious, do things that get in touch with that. Spend lots of time with people you care about or who care about you, and just get out there and live. Please reconsider medication. It is not a good thing.

Dear Abbie, there's no such thing as a quick fix I'm sorry to say. There are a lot of different medications that can help greatly to relive your anxiety and depression. You might have to experiment to find out which ones are right for you.

But, that's only the first step, medication will never take care of everything. You need counselling, it goes hand in hand with medication. Please get a referal from your doctor while you're there.

I wish you the best luck on your road to recovery :)

Girlfriend take some deep breaths... calm your self down! You are having anxiety over seeing a doctor about your anxiety! Sit down light a candle and try to have some rational thoughts they are there just focus on them...You need to tell your self that yes the meds will help they will not work over night... it has taken me seven years to get to this point how can I realistically think that I will feel better over night! You need to trust your doctor 100% I'm sure you will gradualy notice a change in how you are feeling it will not happen over night... take care, calm down and for every irrational thought you have write it down and than beside it write down a rational thought to erase the irrational one. After a few months look at that book and you will see your progress.... peace... your friend : )

Medication can help with the symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, if you want to work through these issues, you need to seek professional help. Depression and anxiety stem from other things going on in your life. If you don't adress these issues directly, it will be a continual battle. A professional can help you in pinpointing whats really going on. There are no quick fixes for treatment of depression.

I suffer from depression over 3 years now.. but medicine like for me didn't work.. tried over 6 different types.. remember that medicine won't make you feel better the first day you take it.. and medicine has lots of side-effects.. exercise has really helped me.. or doing activities to take my mind of my depression so i am not sitting around thinking about it 24/7.. or counseling has helped many people.

Medication may help. It can take up to 2 weeks for some side effects like nausea, fatigue to go away, and for you to see results. If medication possibly combined with therapy, you may be able to lead a complely normal life.
