Because they are gullible. Jesus is recorded as saying that his disciples would not see death before they saw Jesus arriving in glory with the kingdom. They died, never seeing any such thing. Paul (who wrote much earlier than the writers of the gospels) also thought Jesus would return within his lifetime. He died and never saw Jesus.
In Jesus' teachings, you will see that he taught an apocalyptic message. With a sense of urgency, he told his disciples and others to abandon their jobs and families, to sell all they had and give the money to the poor, to not worry about food, clothing or other needs. Why? Because they would not need these things if God's kingdom were soon to arrive!
You will also see that modern-day disciples of Christ downplay all these commands or try to make them mean something other than what they were. They do this because they realize that it has been 2000 years since Jesus said these things, and he still has not returned, and it is unlikely that he is going to return any time soon. No point giving up all your possessions to live in poverty if Jesus isn't coming back, right? They do not truly believe those passages because deep inside, they see their irrelevancy. Not too many Christians sell their homes to await the Second Coming on a mountain top these days.

Jesus will return. Read the Bible yourself. Don't rely on tv evangelists, clever arguments, or someone else's interpretation of a few scriptures they read or heard about in Sunday school 20 years ago. Like Elvee Kaye ( not to sound mean or anything) . Jesus is recorded as saying that some of his disciples would not see death before they saw Him in all His glory...read about the Transfiguration...three of His disciples witnessed the event. And the urgency Elvee mentioned is just a figment of his\her imagination. Now Jesus did stress the importance of why he was here and He spent the last 3 or so years of His earthly life impressing upon us the importance of what we would need to do before He returned in the future.
See the truth is when He returns the world will be in the worse shape it has ever been in since the dawn of man. And to correct thing to its original order will require those who didn't trust Him as the Way, the Truth and the Life to be judged according to their own merits. And since none of us would pass the test outside of what He taught us the first time He was here, to trust totally in Him, we would fail the most important test of our lives. And the consequence of failing that test is eternal damnation. Hell! Believe it or not.
So, its a matter of what you decide to beleive. Because you will ultimately answer for yourself...no one can be held accountable for your decision accept you. And if Elvee is right...then 300...400 hundred years from now...no big deal...but if I am right...and Jesus is the only way to eternal life...300...400 hundred years from now (or maybe tomorrow) ...and you reject Jesus as Lord...then you will spend all eternity (in hell) asking yourself why I didn't I believe.

"It is my considered opinion that we are in the latter days. The Lord himself does not know when He will return, only His Father in heaven. When the world is ripe in iniquity we will need to be watchful for the great signs which will be shown in heaven, the moon will be turned to blood and the stars will fall from heaven.
Let us look around ourselves, the world is full of iniquity, there are wars and rumors of wars, men love themselves and not God and seek after the riches of this world. Surely the day is nigh at hand."

Where'd you get the idea that Jesus is never coming back? Jesus will be returning, and if I were you, I'd make sure that I was right with him before he gets here.
