We put crown molding up and the person who did it used silicone caulk on the edges and joints. I need a paint which will adhere as a base primer so we can paint the trim the color we want.

oil based primer should adhere to anything, but I have not tried it myself. I have noticed that the brand of caulking makes a difference. Latex paint will adhere to some but not to others.

The only way you can paint silicone caulking is if it is paintable silicone.... the person who did the crown molding should know if that's the kind they used. If they say yes, then basically, paint it with any kind of paint, you won't even need to prime.

If they didn't use paintable silicone, then the only thing you can try (and I'm not certain it will work) is to use an oil based primer such as Bull's Eye 1-2-3 or Kilz.

Hope they used paintable silicone! If they are professionals, they did...

no primer water or oil base will adhere in your situation the only solution is to caulk over the silicone caulk ( if the person who did the previous caulking left you a tight bead) as for the joints between the pieces and the corners they will have to be cut out with a razor knife,,, this is time consuming and remember to be careful you are using a very sharp cutting tool. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i do have over twenty years experience as a painter and i still do it today. "kilz" out of a spray can would allow you to paint over silicone but to spray kilz on crown molding is so messy that you can count on painting the wall, ceiling and then to crown molding.

Another moron that should have his hands cut off!!! Use an Alkyd Oil Primer for this; just be sure to trim away any excess caulking. If you are thinking of painting this crown with a latex base paint follow the Alkyd-Oil Primer with a coat of Glidden's Gripper Primer/Sealer and you'll be able to use the latex. Gripper is the best overall primer/sealer on the market.

only in the dreams is there a paint that will adhere to silicone caulk, nothing sticks to it for very long, i'm lucky if i can get paint to stick to it tilll the check clears...
by the way what was the brainless twitt thinking when he applied silicone caulk to those areas? it is specifically for weather/water tight seals like in bathrooms around tubs and such...areas that will not be painted...says so right on the packaging.
