Smoking issue for example. Those against smoking will say anything, no matter, how absurd, about smoking. And act as though it is the truth, even if there little or no evidence. And surely those that live to be 90 and smoke all of their lives are "just lucky." I have smoked for 45 years and I am healthy and in better shape then most guys my age, so I am "just lucky."
Isn't most of life like that? Our lifestyle dictates what is true and what is not?

William D, actually it isn't. Sure 2 + 2 =4, no doubt. But is the separation of church and state in the Constitution? Many will argue, yes. And it is not. Are the public schools the "state?" NO. Yet many swear up and down that they are.
But as to my notes, if smoking kills absolutely, then why am I not dead?
Simple answer- Because smoking does not kill. Yet people with PHD's will demand that only their "truth" on the subject be heard.
Did you know that largest and longest study ever done on so-called second-hand smoke showed that there is no effects whatsoever on anyone? Yet the Medical Doctor that runs the American Heart Assocation wrote to the British Medical Journal, (they did the study), and demanded why they released the results of this study. And made claims that their study was flawed.
This was a 40 year study of over 200 smokers and their families.
But this "truth" was not the "truth" that the anti-smoking crowd wanted to hear so it was simply ignored.

No, that is only truth to you. But we are not that important.
It is God's will that is important, and what is the real truth.
Can't be two truths.
WE either die and go to hell or we just die and return to the dust . Big difference there. ONe is suffering an eternity of torment. The other we go away like before we were born.
Heaven is either the home of spirit persons and the rulers over the earth or it is the future home of all humans.
So some will live on the earth for an eternity or the earth will burn up?
The muslims are right or the Christians are right. One is an infidel and one is just fooling themselves into thinking they are saved with God.
Remember the prophet who poured water on the sacrifice and in ditches all around the sacrifice. Then the God who took up the sacrifice was the true God and his people had the right religion.
The baal worshippers had dry wood and cut themselves and danced around and suffered.
All of a sudden from heaven came a flash of light and a fire and not only sucked up the sacrifice but the wood the water in the ditch and probably scared the people almost to death.
We need something like that now to prove who is the real God? What is his real name? Is it Allah, Jehovah or something else?

There are different kinds of truth. Science and medicine show "cause and effect" about smoking. Being hit by a 50-cal. shell from a sniper rifle will blow a hole several inches in anything. Driving off a high cliff will kill the driver. Each of these things are true. It is also true there must have been exceptions at least once to each of these things. Why? A fraction of an inch makes all the difference.
To an extent the truth is what we want it to be, when we are in control. When it is out of our hands, it is not.
We speak of the truth of God, it is His view that matters, not ours. He controls life.

I guess the answer to your question depends on what truth you are speaking of. Truth from a physical perspective, can vary from person to person in the way you mention. Your truth is that you can smoke with impunity. That is not truth for everyone. Medical truth in general is that only old men die of pancreatic cancer yet my brother died of the disease at the ripe old age of 26. The truth was different for him.
Spiritual truth is another matter. Paul said there is "one faith, one God, one baptism." So spiritually speaking we may WANT to create our own truth by doing what "feels good" but God would beg to differ.

Two plus two equals four, even when you want it to be five.
As to the smoking, there's ample evidence out there that it is not healthy. When you smoke, you know that the evidence is out there that it is unhealty -- you just choose not to heed the evidence. (That's not a slam. I love my parents and they are heavy chain smokers). I'm just saying the truth is there, but you are opting for a preference, if that makes sense.

As this question is in religion and you are religious (and I am not) I shall answer religiously:
Scientists have identified 300 asteroids with orbits that pass close to the Earth. If one of them hits there will be catastrophic loss of life. We, the human race, don't yet have much hope of stopping an asteroid hitting the earth. With that in mind, it would actually be a much better thing for us if an all-powerful God did exist (assuming that he liked us, of course).
I still don't believe in God.
However, you could well be right in the case of the people who come here and deny evolution, or the occasional idiot who pops up here and says, for example, that homosexuality is a choice caused by people rejecting God.

Sorry, you are not correct. The truth is the truth is the truth is the truth. It is not relative. Of course people argue their points and try to make you believe their point of view is the truth, just as you are doing in your note. That doesn't make it truth. Truth is absolute.

The truth is the truth. Some people may say things and claim it to be true (even though its not) to make themselves feel better.

You can't generalize like that.
There are absolutes in the world whether you aknowledge them or not.

If that were true then pedophiles and murderers should get away with what they do. They think it's right, but does that mean it is?
