You get home theater systems, the complete package ( receiver and speaker system) from Sony, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha,Samsung starting around $250(USD) upwards.
You need to go to the show room and listen to them. Take your music cds, usually listen to music that tests the system's strength like
1.A solo guitar in a song. Listen to how well the system brings out the sound. Is it too uncomfortable when its cranked up (too bright).
2.And deep bass, does the system distort under the bass. when you crank up the volume.
3.Is the bass punchy or loose. You need it to be punchy as well as hitting the lows, where you can feel the tremor of the subwoofer.
4.Finally play a movie, see if you can listen to the conversation comfortably. Take Lord of the Rings! or Star Wars! Lot of action and conversation.
Be very picky, invest wisely.
Or you could choose audophile equip for (min) $800 like 5.1 home theater receiver from Denon, surround speakers from Wharfedale/Polk/Paradigm/Infinity Primus, center channel, sub... going to cost you too much if $800 is too much for your budget.
