You know, in times of war and the panic following a natural disaster, most people are more receptive to what they assume is the word of God and the preachers can speak in soft words in a soft voice and have complete control. But when people are relaxed and have a few minutes to think about what they are being told, the word of God sounds like the nonsensical ramblings of a madman. So the preacher’s solution is to turn up the scare factor and throw in a few keywords with dark connotations like hellfire, Armageddon, rapture, Satan, evil, sin etc.

If you think about it, the only way for oppressive religion to function is through fear. In order to make a person submit to such a ridiculous story, the tactic of fear is the most effective (see Catholic Missionaries). All religion preys upon ones fear of death, it's just that some are better than others. In order to truly fear death, it takes an extreme motivator like Hell and the devil. If you are worried about death and someone tells you that you will go to Hell forever unless you believe their superstitious world view, it is a good motivator. And when you accept religious dogma, you must suspend all logic and reason from your mind, making you into an automaton that will be willing to do things that most rational people would never do, like suicide bombings or all of the wars sprung from religious disagreement. Religion is mental slavery imposed through the fear of death. Just because a lot of people believe it does not make it true, they need each other and the group solidarity to validate their own suspension of logic and reason. And it is important to remember that no matter what anyone says, no one on this planet from the Pope to the Dahli Lhama knows what happens when you die, so make sure and hold skepticism when you examine any religion. And make sure to prize logic and reason above all else because you are the only person who can hand over control of your mind.

You must have visited a "hellfire and brimstone" revival kinda church. My pastor speaks so quietly and respectfully, and although he's a quirky old man, he certainly doesn't scare me.

Hope you find a preacher that does not need a volume/scare factor control. :)

Really not a very good anti-Christian question. But then what should we expect? All preachers have their own style and few ever use the dark connotations that you speak of. Of course, you have no idea what you are talking about anyway, ..............so?

My Bible says that Jesus spoke as someone having authority. To me someone having authority is someone like a drill instructor greeting a bunch of recruits on a Marine Corps boot camp bus. Anybody agree?
