Everyone tries to be so politically correct now. I'm not talking about hurling racial slurs, but don't you think it seems like now people are just looking for reasons to claim that something offends them?
I went to return something to a store today. I had called ahead of time to make sure it was okay. When I got there, the clerk said "do you remember who you spoke with?" I said, "I'm not sure, but it may have been a foreign accent" and she goes "You know what, that is not necessary, you could have just told me her name, you didn't need to call her out by talking about her accent." WHAT???? I was going? I said, "I didn't say one bad thing about her or her accent, I just didn't get her name, and I thought maybe that would identify who the worker was." She like jerked my stuff from me and went off mumbling. So, what do you think? Are we just too freaking sensitive? Was my statement offensive??? wtf?

Yeh, that was a ridiculous reaction. I do think people are just looking for something to get all riled about - GET A LIFE PEOPLE. Saying someone has a foreign accent is NOT offensive. If you had walked in there and started saying "Yeh, I talked to some foreign bitgh" or something, I could understand. That lady should be slapped upside her stupid head.

The sales clerk needs an attitude adjustment. That was just wrong. I understand your question, how else could you have described her? I don't see it as discriminatory and would not be offended if someone referred to me as that white lady with a southern accent. I too am tired of this political correctness. If we can learn to speak in a pleasant manner with no derogatory remarks all should be OK.

The lady in the store was a witch. She was looking for a reason to be offended. People with accents know they have them.

Yes people are getting a little too sensitive. Dare I say, a LOT too sensitive.

The more comforable we are about our selves with in, the more comfortable we are with others. You were giving a description to ID who you spoke to, for some reason it rubbed
her the wrong way, May be just a bad day and you were in line of fire. It happens, We live in a very stressful, angry era.

I don't think your awnser was offensive at all. You didn't know her name. What else were you suppose to identify her by? HER HAIR? HA! I think you should report the person and Maybe you would get some kind of restitution. Maybe 20 percent off your next purchase? This person deserves to be reprimanded. I've worked in retail before and her actions were unnecessary and could scare off customers. Remember...The customer is always right!

It does not sound as though you were being intentionally hurtful, but why say a 'foreign' accent? Of course an accent is foreign, lol.

Personally, it sounds as though the woman overreacted, but who knows what went on before you walked in ~ maybe someone had been horrible to her. I doubt you caused the problem.

As far as customer service goes, it was certainly not her finest moment, but I think you already know that.

Cheers! :-)

Um, Thing55000, "Of course an accent is foreign, lol." - WRONG, that's a stupid thing to say - there are SOUTHERN accents, northern accents, midwestern accents, etc. - why would you say "lol of course an accent is foreign" - stupid.

Yeh, that lady was just a bi1ch. Sometimes I just want to way overreact right back at them like say "She sounded really FAT, so I guess it must have been YOU."

I hear where you're coming from, at the same time, minorities of all types are confronted with different adversities...you never know what people are implying.

No. Society is swinging the opposite direction of political correctness. And, innocent people (especially younger) are hurt by this.

That is absolutely absurd. Next thing you know, people are going to be offended by someone pointing out their eye color... give it up people. We're all different and unique. What's so wrong with using our unique traits to identify each other?
