A little more info would help. But the 1st answer is pretty much it. Get one and ride. Upgrade later after you find out if you like road or MTB or both like me.
At 16 I got my 1st real job - as a bike mechanic. The few guys that worked there would all ride together, do day trips out to the lake. Set up race courses in the park. Do TTs (time trials) sprints etc. made it up as we went. No such thing as MTB back then so road riding was it.
After you mess around some and figure out what you really want out of cycling, contact a local club if you want riding buds or some serious training. Get a job in a shop - I still use this skills I learned back then. My 3 best friends are all from that bike shop these many years later.
Cycling has meant much more to me than spinning wheels.

All of the sugestions are viable. However, I would say that you should go to a reasonably large shop that has a selection of rental bikes (You usually find these places scattered around outdoor style tourist spots.). Tell them that you want to try out several bikes and negotiate a rental deal for the day. Failing that, many places have test ride weekends. In short, try before you buy.

1st go down to your local specialized dealer.
Tell them you are 'new'.
They will ask you a few questions about what you expect to do, ie: commute, train, compete, your physical condition, etc. Then they will have you test ride a few different bikes. If you get one , they then fit it to you. Measuring reach, seat height, knee postion ( plum line) etc..
They even measure the behind for correct seat width.
And onces you got your nice toy they can outfit you with the correct riding gear for your riding style such as HELMET, gloves, eye protection, shoes etc.
They also know of local rides.
STAY AWAY FROM DEPARTMENT STORE BIKES>
Lot of good brands out there. Talk to the people who know. Your local bike shop
David
No affliciation with above mentioned brands.

First i didnt call it "cycling" its called riding. Second if you really want to ride i suggest you get yourself a mongoose. The only "gear" you need is your legs and you're set.
