i think many planners charge you a percentage. i don't know how they come up with the percentage, but they usually charge 15-25% of your final wedding costs. but everyone is different so shop around.

There is NO average price because different people (event planners - wedding planners - wedding coordinators - bridal consultants - social event specialists) do different things.
Some people charge "by the hour"
Some people charge "by the project or event"
And some people charge "a percentage of the total wedding budget"
If you just want some advice or information or planning help then call "a planner" and make an appointment for a one - two hour appointment.
If you want someone to plan your rehearsal dinner than you want to hire someone "for that project."
If you want someone "to do everything" (several months of work) then you will be charged a percentage of that total wedding cost.
For more information go to the Association of Bridal Consultants website . . www.BridalAssn.com.
There are lots of "consultants" in the US and throughout Canada . . Europe . . and Japan. Send them an E-mail . . check out their individual/business websites . . call them on the phone . . interview them. And if one "consultant" can't help you, then call another.

Where do you live? Prices are going to vary state to state. A wedding planner in NYC is going to cost a whole lot more than a wedding planner in South Alabama . . . just for example.
For an accurate estimate, call local wedding planners and ask. Tell them what services you need. Asking for only day-of-wedding coordination will cost a lot less than needing a planner to help you throughout the whole wedding planning process. Think about what you need, and ask for an estimate.

Actually depending on your area it is 10-15% of your total budget. But you may be able to find someone who charges an hourly fee for some consulting if you don't need them to plan the whole thing, but just need help with coordinating the details.
You can search for planners/coordinators in your area:

This is very difficult to answer since, like most everything you buy, it depends on your location.
Here is an article which will explain how to hire a wedding planner: http://www.topweddingsites.com/wedding_planner_consultants.html
