Nope. No need. Enough young Americans understand what freedom is worth and are volunteering.
These are not the poor dregs of society. These are bright young middle class kids who could be going to college. A friend of mine makes $75K a year. His daughter is currently in Northern Iraq supporting the surge. She wanted to.
Ya'll need to get out of the hallowed halls of academia and away from the liberal echo chambers in the city and rub shoulders with mainstream America.

No, we can't afford it anymore. The only reason we were able to draft people back in WWII and Vietnam was because soliders didn't require any special training, all you had to do was give them a gun, show them how to use it, and teach them basic military tactics.
Today, however, a little thing called a 'computer' is involved. You can't just draft somebody anymore and hope they know how to run a UAV, or draft somebody and hope they know how to use the new computer's each solider will carry very soon. (2010)
Also, it costs about 1 billion for every 10,000 troops in our military. We can't afford to draft in bulk. Our country is already in debt 9 trillion.

Absolutely not. This country is very, very much against military service (in terms of people actually considering having to earn their rights and serve their country honorably, rather than let others carry that burden for them, as it is now). If such a thing happened, however, you'd see a mass exodus of people making a run for Canada, which might have a surprise benefit, in that we'd have slightly fewer people in this country who have no qualms about freeloading on the service of others in this country's military. Instituting the draft would mean the very first time that the American people themselves would be actually inconvenienced by this war; I highly doubt that most Americans would even know how to handle it, but I doubt many of them would handle it responsibly or honorably. In any case, too many of our politicians are more concerned with their reputations and careers than doing what's right for the country (even if that meant a draft, which right now it doesn't); they would shoot it down before it even came up for suggestion.
Those of us in the military or who have served in the military wouldn't want a draft; it would greatly lower the caliber of people serving, since instead of being volunteers, you'd be working with a lot of disgruntled and/or grossly unqualified individuals with absolutely no interest in serving their country or doing their jobs well... or capability to do so. Better to keep the military voluntary and keep it as high-quality as it is now.

It was the Democrats that brought draft bills to Congress in the past 8 years. And the Republicans voted it down each time. Now the Democrats are in charge and guess what? They are NOT bringing their draft bill up again.
I think it would take a nuke going off in San Francisco to get the Democrats to vote for a draft.

No. Public sentiment has been against the draft since Vietnam, and the sentiment of the all-volunteer, proffessional military is much the same, albeit for different reasons.

Well, if the war continues, and if military recruitment levels continue as they are, they may not have much of a choice. Maybe if there was a draft, the more complacent Americans might get off their butts and stop this stupid war.

No, they will reach the recruiting goals. Instead of enacting a draft, they are giving more and better benefits to those who do join.

Well personally I hope not. But if worse came to worse I wouldn't mind joining, only if the reason for it is good. I'm not spilling for the lies and oil we're waring over. But if the fight ever came to our homeland I'd be willing to risk my life to help protect loved ones.
But I heard that in 2008 it may happen, but it might be a way to scare us a bit, and reason to raise taxes so we can "prevent it".
