no sub ever provided power for charleston the base is closed there. the reactors cant even start to power a city the size of charleston. this must be a urban myth even the old reactors would need a core change more than 3 times a year just to keep up. i takes 4 nice size reactors to power a aircraft carrier for 20 years or close to 20. a sub reactor is way smaller. it couldnt do it. theres no way they would bother useing old stuff to build a plant there. where did you hear this ?

I doubt that any submarines provided power for a city the size of Charleston, SC. It is, theoretically possible, however. It would require a very carefully thought out and prearranged electrical lineup and only a few critical locations could be powered. It would be possible that they used submarines to power the Charleston Naval base, though.

A submarine did provide power to the island of Hawaii after a major hurricane hit it about 15 or so years ago. Hawaii is a much smaller proposition than a substantial metropolitan area such as Charleston.

The idea of floating nuclear power plants has been kicked around for years and just recently the Russians have started investigating it again and have actually contracted for a ship. Of course, the various ecology nuts are opposed it just because it is nuclear. (Reference #1 below)

Your idea may have come from a misunderstanding. There was an article called "Nuclear Power: From Submarine to Shore" published 1 OCT 2004. Some reading only the headline took it to mean using the subs nuclear reactor to supply power to the shore. In fact, it meant nuclear power got is start in the submarines and nuclear submariners then worked to move that power to shore based facilities. (See reference #2 below)

Hope this clears it up.
