I really do not like spiders, and a friend was telling me about the horrible effects of the brown recluse, and I didn't believe him, and I googled it. I saw horribly disgusting pictures, and now I'm mortally afraid of spiders. What should I do if I'm bit by one? Before I go to the hospital? Is there anything at home I could put on it before I left?

I saw a program on animal planet. They said 20% of people who THOUGHT they'd been bitten by brown recluse had been bitten by the nasty things. I'm not downplaying your fear, I hate the reched little things myself.

If you are bitten by a brown recluse... the only thing that you can do is get medical treatment, and even then you are going to lose flesh. If you are bitten by a brown recluse then it will pretty obvious that it isn't a standard spider bite. Most spiders are not that bad. A black widow can mess up your day but not kill you. Black widows are docile and usually always hang out in cool and dark places.... the same as brown recluses. Most of your harmless spiders are out in the daylight.
So unless you are really just rooting around in the dirt, cellar, under a house or in it's attic....you really don't need to be afraid. And even if you do get bit, you can deal with it.

Get an exterminator--that should help your phobia. If not, go to a good therapist!! I got over my fear/dislike of spiders, living in Fukuoka, Japan, for a year!! They have huge HUNTER spiders that do not spin webs. They hunt their prey down!! The pair that lived in my house, slept aBOVE our heads on the ceiling in the bedroom. I finally realized that they were collecting the heat from our uncovered heads.
It was 29 degree winters and no central heating. I was finally THANKFUL for their vigilance, when one day my big bath tub was heating and I was ready to step into it, when a huge centipede dropped down from the rafters!! It was a large segmented worm-like thing w/ stingers on the "business-end"!! THAT was what the spiders ate and hunted down!!!! After understanding the spiders' role, I talked with them as they followed me through my day!!! They became my friends!!! I later went into training and worked as a therapist for 21 yrs. I DO recommend that you explore this fear w/a professional!!!

Stop thinking about it unless you happen to have them! If you were to be bitten, you'd have to get to the ER - pronto! As in, calling 911....but, be sure it's a brown recluse before calling in the infantry. Good luck!

Go to the hospital ASAP! If possible take the spider with you.
